I was watching for the first time, in a ling while the drama "Ordinary people "Starring Timothy Hutton, Mary Tyler moore and Donald Sutherland (yes keifers father).Timothy huttons character has just been out of a mental facility for a month (after a suicide attempt) after the death of his older brother.
Everyone is waliking on eggshells around Timothy's character, his mother (played chillingly by Moore) seems to blame her youngest for the older brothers( her favorites) death. Timothy Hutton is as good as as James dean in this film and probley is better (Dean sometimes hogged the screen) Donald Sutherland (I think his best performance),ever)... Plays a amiable father, full of compassion For his son, and dismayed by his wife's detachment and coldness.
Jud Hirsch plays the psychiatrist( I still think of him in taxi, though).... Elizabeth Mcgovern (now the star of Downtown abbey) plays the girlfriend, very pretty. This movie was directed by actor, Robert Redford( hes a better director). Won best picture.
