VEGAN QUESTIONS..............ReleaseMe

Many years ago I was vegetarian for about 18 months. For reasons I don't recall, I stopped and began to eat meat again. However, I've always considered going back to a vegetarian diet and now possibly a vegan diet. And while contemplating this, a few questions came to mind.

If everyone in the whole world stopped consuming meat and meat derived products at this very minute, what would happen to all of the live stock that is currently in the world?

What would happen to the animal populations? How would this affect the ecology of our world? Would we suddenly become overrun by animal populations? And what about the spread of disease amongst large populations of animals? And the potential for that disease to crossover to human populations?

What would happen to all the meat that is currently in storage waiting for sales? Would it all go to waste? What about all of the people that work in the meat industry? Would they all be suddenly out of a job? And how would the loss of this industry affect our economy?

I'm really interested in hearing some theories to these questions.

Date: 12/28/2012 2:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    Hmmm... those are some interesting questions. I actually went vegetarian, then vegan, than raw foods a few years ago. It was a difficult transition at first but I did enjoy it. I lost 30 lbs eating raw foods and was extremely energetic and healthy. As you, I slipped back into my old ways, I think partially because of money, because one must be aware that in order to buy organic foods and vegetables it is expensive. You can buy meat for cheaper than some fruits and vegetables, which I don't think is right. I think instead of meat factories we could convert to agriculture and organic farming, our society would be a lot healthier.
But honestly, I do not think this country wants that, in fact they are making it more difficult to farm. Everything is GMO's now and the corn we eat is not what it used to be. I watched a documentary called, "King Corn" and they took samples of human DNA and found corn in it, because of our diet. And it's not that good for you. Also, healthier people means less health care and prescriptions. So bring in so much money on those alone, so I do not think we are looking that hard into finding curses for diabetes and the "weight epidemic" when we know full well fruits and vegetables make people healthier.
I don't think there would be over-population of animals, cows, for example. I think it might stable out and the animals that are bred for consumption would die out. There would be more, healthier, wild animals that if someone wanted to hunt and eat them, they would not be filled with hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides. Kinda like Bison meat.
I think less consumption of red meat and pork would lower disease in human beings. I also don't think mass production is a good thing, for anything really. There has to be a better way than what is taking place now.
I would never tell anyone what they should eat, so I tell people it wouldn't hurt to incorporate more fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, and proteins such as hemp, coconut, and nuts. I do not think processed soy is good for us either. Fermented soy, like miso, yes, but not the fad diets that claim soy is the best alternative to a healthy diet.
Interesting post, I am looking forward to more comments!

I forgot that in order to keep up with feeding the world with fruits and vegetables that would also mean taking more land to grow and farm them, which we also know is not good for the environment. I don't think that the world will ever do a complete switch and after lengthy consideration on the subject, I don't think that it would be good for a complete change over, for obvious reasons. I also don't think that GMOs are the answer to the supposed food shortage that we have in the world. Once those genetically engineered foods are introduced into our environment, there is no way to keep the crops completely pure and natural. And over time those genetic mutations are going to present a whole host of other problems, both environmentally and physically for humans.

I'm not sure how the switch would affect the populations of animals. I think like you mentioned, that over time the livestock would die out some, but how long would that take? Who would be responsible for taking care of the animals in the mean time? Feeding them, housing them etc? Not to mention the cost that would inccur in order to do that.

I agree that limiting your overall consumption of meat would be healthier, and particularly red meat, which I very rarely eat myself. I try to make the majority of the foods I put in my body, fruits and vegatables and whole grains. But like you also mentioned, it is very expensive to live on a diet like that. And I've noticed that going vegan, means that the majority of foods marketed as vegan, contain soy. I tried soy milk and few years ago and had an unpleasant reaction to it, so I'm not even sure I could sustain myself on a diet that is based on soy.

Definitely lots to consider here. Again thanks for your input.
