Was this on one of those pages that was copied from a book, or was it sentences that the teacher wrote? If the teacher wrote it, s/he must be going through a rough time right now, but I still don't feel it appropriate, especially for 5th grade. |

I don't know, with the way sociaty is today and reality being forefront in the media and in other trashy programs, these sentances seem mundane examples of sentance and word comprehension. It will also give the students better critical thinking skills as well as understanding of human nature. I know in the 5th grade that I and many of the other students were more advanced than partents gave credit. I for one see parents today being overly protective of material their children are exposed to and less informative on how to handle said material. So you run into the 3 monkies see, hear, speak and it won't happen to my child. But then the child being presented with an issue has no idea how to cope with it. I say leave it alone they are all true life statements. |

Well, the human quality inherent in all of these given situation is that of "coveting" that which you know you shouldn't. The bigger question for me is what lesson is meant to be conveyed: Is it that everyone is prone to covet so let's get a handle on that, or is it that everyone is prone to covet so . . . so what? In the first example, Dante is being compared to the night, darkness, that which is out of the light. Is it appropriate for 5th graders to compare and contrast? Yes. Is this the best example to accomplish this? Probably not. In the second example, the man is equating being married to having a joyous home life. This question calls for critical thinking in that the 5th graders are being questioned on their own personal home life and whether or not they have personal experience which allows them to analyze effectively. I find this to be a bit intrusive for this age group, but would hope their critical thinking skills would allow them to understand that happiness is an individual characteristic and that what one person considers happiness is not necessarily incumbent to others finding happiness. Since I was kind of a smart alecky 5th grader, my answer probably would have included the question: Is the man's wife's name "Joy"? In the third example, the creaking floor and the shoes are "snitches". The students seem to be asked whether dad is upset because the boy was sneaking out or because he got caught, i.e., whether he was coveting the boy's adventures, or his own sleep. I find the use of the name Vito to be culturally insensitive nonetheless, and the example to be one of the teacher's attempt to have the question more provocative in order to get more provocative responses which, to me, indicates the teachers own lack of imagination to hold these kids' attention. All JMHO. God Bless. |
Date: 12/7/2012 6:11:00 PM From Authorid: 53427 I think its a bit tacky. But I wouldn't call a meeting about it. I think there are worse things going on in schools that is more important to focus on. I'm sure the kids see much worse on the tv each night. |

I have noticed that a lot of the discussion and work done in schools is a lot different than when we were in school. I assume we are about the same age? (20's) My younger sister is in 5th grade and she came home telling us they were reading historical ghost stories in library and talking about how people died and are haunting locations... now I love paranormal stuff but I don't think it was very appropriate for school, especially when she was scared to go to sleep in her room for a week after reading these stories. I guess things are changing, I can understand a 'spooky' book for Halloween but she was telling us people died and husbands killed wives etc.etc. which I am surprised because in college (education major) they told us this is extremely inappropriate to teach or talk about in class with young children. Maybe in a conference concerns can be brought up about some of the work? It's very interesting isn't it? |

Which part was insensitive? Dante and Alan can be of any race, and Vito was named after his father. I think a lot of people today are just too sensitive to being PC. Now had the question been " This (insert racial slur here) tried to live a pious life and being a good father, but the streets called him at night where he went to shoot and shootup with his gang." that would have been insesitive. But being called to the streets doesn't denote any race nor does the name Dante. I think the sentance refers to having the urge to go out to the life he once had with friends, but it doesn't even state he does. So without more information about it, it becomes a moot point. Same goes for the rest of them. I think you are just overly reacting to media stimulus about being PC and not taking the sentances' at face value. |
Date: 12/13/2012 8:50:00 AM From Authorid: 11097 LOL... don't get me wrong, I am all for the paranormal and being open minded, but some of the things my sister was telling me was a little violent in connection with the stories. But I agree, some things are a bit ridiculous. I will tell you a secret, I recently finished student teaching and graduated with an Education degree and certification- I was told to student teach out of the teacher handbook, that no lessons are prepared by teachers anymore, the handbooks follow the curriculum. Well... I didn't go to school to teach out of a book, so I did student teaching without it, of course with the teachers approval, best 16 weeks of my life with that class. I will not be teaching from a book, anyone can do that... |
