Odd noises

Seems like things in my house goes in spurts.  The house is newer, when I first moved in there were a lot of strange noises that gradually diminished..noises like snapping sounds, the sound of change being dropped on the dresser as I'm laying in bed.  We had neighbors over and we heard the kids running around upstairs which was odd, they were several streets over playing.  I went upstairs to check, but no one was there.

My oldest daughter rarely slept in her room when she was living here.  She would close her closet door firmly, but it would often be open in the morning.  Nothing is wrong with her closet door to make it open on its own.  We have a balcony that overlooks the family room, all of us at one time or another has had the feeling that someone is watching us from up there.

Several nights ago my daughter and I were sitting in the family room and we heard the oddest noise from upstairs.  It's hard to describe, but it was like a whooshing sound, like a strong wind was blowing down the hallway (remember the balcony, we can hear and see everything up there) and there was a creaking noise like footsteps make in an older house with hardwood floors, except our floors upstairs are carpeted and the house is firmly built so that the floors don't creak.   The dogs even heard it.  They both sat up on full alert and were looking up at the balcony.  I checked outside, and it was perfectly calm.  I went upstairs, no windows were open and if that had been some kind of wind, my door which was open just a crack would have been sucked shut.

later on that night, we heard a door softly open and close from up there.

finally, last night my youngest daughter and I were over at my oldest daughters until about 830.  On the way home I called my husband who didn't know I was out.   He said he had called our house about 730 and someone had clearly picked up, but didn't say anything. *shivers*..I was like great!  Now we have to go in the house by ourselves!  But it was fine.  Nothing was out of place and we didn't hear anything strange last night.

so odd, like I said, this is a newer house, now about 9 years old, but despite that we are the 3rd owners on a street that basically has had no turnovers with the other houses.  No, I don't think anyone was driven out of here because nothing that scary has happened, but its still rather strange.

Date: 9/28/2012 9:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    I think when I was growing up, my Aunt's house was pretty darned scary. YOu could hear the wind whistling between the houses as if it was inside the house...they turned attic into another room, and it always sounded like there was someone walking up there even when no one was anywhere near the stairs leadidng up to it...and the stairs were always creaking and groaning like someone was coming up and down the stairs, and leaning into the bannister. They had an above ground basement where my Uncle had his little TV repair shop, and there was always noises coming from it. My Aunt said all the noises were rats in the walls. I guess she was trying to keep us from being scared...it always sounded like someone was coming up and down the outside stairs on the front and back, too. We never could figure out exactly what these noises were.

Date: 9/28/2012 9:59:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    I did look for an explanation to the wind sound, just couldn't find one. We've had high winds before, most recently 90 mph in the spring and even then we didn't have that kind of noise in the house itself.
Date: 9/28/2012 11:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    You got that right, Kelly! Ghosts don't leave little 'pellets' and they don't chew through electrical wires, or insulation, or walls....that I know of, anyway.
Date: 9/28/2012 3:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 31531    Well as long as no one is being harmed I wouldn't worry about the noises.I used to have a lot of noises in my house.I just stopped paying any attention to them.My cat and I saw a large mist go down my hallway into the front bedroom once. But lately nothing I hope it stay that way.
Date: 9/28/2012 4:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Kasti, we pretty much do ignore it, it's not like swinging a baseball bat would do any good.
Date: 9/29/2012 11:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 64702    You could always check in to the "history" of the land area the neighborhood now sits on? We have some land out in the country and were able to optain the information the last owners we bought it from and the ones before them, and the ones before them who first lived on it, when it was quit being farmed and also when the first "progess" the area saw when they went through there putting up power cable towers when electricty was first supplied to the town in the mid '20's. Your neighborhood have been part of a farm stood waaay back. Danny
Date: 9/29/2012 1:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228    Danny, this area has only been built up within the last decade, In fact, we're still surrounded by fields. There very well could have been a farmhouse here during that time.
