The Mudhouse Mansion is a terrifying haunted house located just outside of the small city of Lancaster, Ohio. According to the locals in Lancaster, the house was variously said to be built in 1840 by a government official who lived there after the Civil War. The man still kept slaves in the mansion even though it was illegal at the time. It seems the man didn't abide by the law and kept his slaves locked up in an outbuilding at night which was the carriage house.
The man treated his slaves very poorly and conditions were so bad that one slave started building a tunnel underneath the wall of the carriage house. He dug a little every night after the lights in the mansion had gone out and the slaveowner and his family had gone to sleep. Eventually, his tunnel was completed and he squeezed himself down the small opening and came up on the other side of the wall.
In the dead of night, he crept towards the mansion, slipped the lock on the back door, tip-toed up the staircase, open the door slowly, and killed everyone inside. In the morning, the locals discovered what had happened, but all the slaves had escaped and no one was ever charged with the crime since the slaves were very poor and spent the rest of their lives in a better place.
The house lay vacant for many years and more years to come afterwards. The neighbors heard strange groans and shrieks coming from within the empty mansion. Everyone believed that it was haunted by the ghost of the slaveowner and his family. Nobody dared to enter the satanic looking building.
According to another local legend, an extreme wealthy man did buy the house in 1892 and moved with his wife and their 3 children. Neighbors saw the family moving in, unloading their belongings from their horse coaches and carrying them into the house. And then..... Nothing. Neighbors never saw them again. The family never left the house. Neighbors thought it was very odd for a family of five to spend all their time indoors.
When one neighbor looked out bedroom window, all he could make out was the figure of a woman, dressed all in white like a wedding bride, standing at the second floor window. The figure wasn't doing anything just standing there, staring at him. When the neighbor looked again the following day, he saw the figure again, standing in the same position. Every day, when the neighbor looked at the Mudhouse Mansion property, the figure was always there, standing in the exact position. On the tenth day, the neighbor called the police and they investigated the property high and low. When the police broke into the mansion and climbed the stairs to the second floor, they were greeted by a satanic sight.
All five family members were hanging lifeless from the ceiling. They were all dressed in their bed clothing and it appeared that they had taken their own lives. The figure the neighbor had seen was the mother of the family, and she hadn't been standing at the window, she had been hanging there for 10 whole days.
After that nobody would live in the Mudhouse Mansion and has remained vacant to this day and not occuppied since the 1930s. People still come to visit the abandoned mansion, but the current owner will not allow anyone to enter the property. He is afraid that if anyone goes in, they will never come out alive.
People have heard the sounds of screaming, yelling, and shrieking inside the mansion. There have been very odd sounds such as a loud noise that sounds like "BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!" and a person screaming at the top of their lungs saying "I'M DYIN' HERE! I'M DYIN' HERE!!! I'M DYIN' HEEERERERREREEE!!!"
Local children call it "Mary's House" and tell that the famous Bloody Mary legend grew up there. People who live in the area say that on dark cold nights, you can sometimes still see the figure of a beautiful woman, all in white, standing motionless on the second floor.
In the 1960s a few hippies vandalized and set an attempt to set the Mudhouse Mansion on fire but failed.
