Deep-Brain Stimulation Found to fix Depression and bi-polar disorder Long-Term

As they stress in the article, this isn't an easy fix since it is major brain surgery.  It took some patients several months to recover, but for those with severe and chronic depression it might be worth it.

Deep depression that fails to respond to any other form of therapy can be moderated or reversed by stimulation of areas deep inside the brain. Now the first placebo-controlled study of this procedure shows that these responses can be maintained in the long term.

Neurologist Helen Mayberg at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, followed ten patients with major depressive disorder and seven with bipolar disorder, or manic depression, after an electrode device was implanted in the subcallosal cingulate white matter of their brains and the area continuously stimulated.

All but one of twelve patients who reached the two-year point in the study had completely shed their depression or had only mild symptoms.

For psychiatrists accustomed to seeing severely depressed patients fail to respond—or fail to maintain a response—to antidepressant or cognitive therapy, these results seem near miraculous.

“It’s almost spooky,” says Thomas Schlaepfer, a psychiatrist at the University of Bonn, Germany, who says he has seen similar long-term results in five treatment-resistant depressed patients following deep-brain stimulation (DBS) in the nucleus accumbens brain area.

Date: 1/7/2012 6:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    I believe it. I am on Pristiq and I can tell when I don't take it, I feel all hyper, and really anxious.
(It's for anxiety though not depression).

Date: 1/8/2012 12:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 53427    I have struggled with depression for many years. And I would have this procedure done, without hesitation, if I could afford it. Brain surgery may sound extreme and dangerous, but for someone suffering, its well worth the risk. Hopefully insurance will cover this eventually.
Date: 1/8/2012 1:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 55533    I need this done on me. My depression is horribly crippling and painful. I end up just laying on the floor not able to make myself do anything and I cry every now and then for no reason. It is horrible. My life would be a little nicer if it weren't for my depression ruining everything.
Date: 1/8/2012 5:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 13969    I read about this somewhere...I can't remember where. While they may have gotten amazing results, I have my doubts. I heard wonderful things about this hokey pokey EMDR therapy that is used on war vets (mainly people with PTSD). In reality, a therapist tapped on my knees while I cried and talked about my problems and the only result was that my knees were sore.
Date: 1/8/2012 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 26598    I use mint chocolate chip ice cream to battle depression, for me it works.
