William Wiles awoke to the sound of gunshots Friday morning in Hollywood. Wiles lives in an apartment overlooking the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street and said he looked outside to see a young gunman in a white shirt firing randomly at cars. Wiles, a student at the Los Angeles Recording School, said he began recording video on his iPhone. A brief video, which he provided to The Times, shows a man in the intersection firing a shot at a pickup truck. A deadly scene in Hollywood The gunman was "being crazy and spastic," Wiles said, adding that he heard the man yelling. The gunman started shooting with no apparent motive. He was killed on Vine Street by Los Angeles police officers Friday morning. A man in a silver Mercedes Benz who was shot in the jaw is in critical condition, police said. The 40-year-old victim was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Other witnesses said the man was standing in the middle of the intersection, apparently "shooting randomly at cars and in the air," said witness Gregory Bojorquez, who was on the way to the Bank of America. "At first it seemed like a movie but then you could hear the shots hitting metal," Bojorquez said. Bojorquez said he then saw a plainclothes officer emerge from a squad car and order the gunman to get on the ground and surrender, but the gunman appeared to ignore him. "He was screaming he was going to die and that he wanted to die," Bojorquez said. The photographer said the man had a knife as well as a gun. He acted like he was going to grab his gun and was shot by the officer, Bojorquez said.

It was just a little to close for comfort!! We were going to go to Hollywood but my Mom got sick! Thank God!!

Date: 12/14/2011 12:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 4995    I think we should outlaw guns to crazy people. There should be STRICT gun laws. But then people can get them off the street without permits so my idea isnt'any good. Too much hearing of random acts of shooting. Its just sad. G.

Date: 12/14/2011 3:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 64985    Guns are just tools as they always have been, and they are necessary, for hunting and for self defence. The police can't be everywhere, but gun owners can be, and licensed and trained to carry. If more people had and carried conceled weopons less random things like this article would occur. People would be afraid of being shot back, anless they just wanted to die like I think this guy did...Corolator
