Date: 12/11/2011 8:07:00 PM From Authorid: 62993 They're only looking for "certain" candidates nowadays. I guess it's just a way to weed out all of the possible hundreds of applicants for the job and yes, it is discriminatory. |
Date: 12/11/2011 9:39:00 PM From Authorid: 53427 That is just ridiculous. I read somewhere a study that showed non smokers were generally more productive workers.. But still!! I guess jobs are so scarce these days that these companies can be as picky as they want. |

I think it must have to do with insurance. Someone who smokes is going to have higher healthcare costs I guess. Not really fair. My Dad who is very healthy, no medical problems whatsoever, worked with a guy who'd had open heart surgery and was going to the er constantly, but they paid the same insurance rate through the company. That guys medical problems drove everyone's health care up and it was split amongst all the employees. I think we should get away from employer based healthcare. With what a company saves in healthcare they could give the money to the employees to go find healthcare coverage on their own at better rates if you took 3rd parties (government/employers) out of the equation. |
Date: 12/12/2011 8:55:00 AM From Authorid: 62956 I also think it's ridiculous for employers to access your credit report and determine your employability on that. Back on the smoking topic though, there are some places like college campuses and office buildings that don't allow smoking anywhere so that may be why... |

Companies denying employment due to smoking is something that has been gaining momentum for the past few years. It has to do with the cost of health insurance. I think that it is legal. I don't know what to think about companies requiring you to past a credit report before they hire you. I've read about it and think that it's based on the belief that if you have a good credit report that you're less likely to steal. However, companies need to look at the current economic situation before they decide if it's a good tool to use right now. Bummer for you though when you're trying to get a job. |
Date: 12/12/2011 10:49:00 AM From Authorid: 37843 That is rediculous, if they had given you the job you would get paid and therefore be able to pay your bills and improve your credit score! What kind of idiots come up with this crap?! Do they not understand simple logic? What's the logic behind possible employers seeing your credit score in the first place? Its not like they're loaning you the money for the hours you put in. |
Date: 12/13/2011 12:52:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101 I was out with my mom getting my nails and feets manicured and pedicured (my late birthday gift! they look so pritty! lol) and this woman was going on and on about how lazy people would rather sit back collect unemployment and how those of (us) losing our houses should just go get jobs and so on and so on... Do I need to tell you what happened in that beauty parlor today??? LOL!!! |
Date: 12/13/2011 4:23:00 PM From Authorid: 4144 i don't understand the whole credit report thing. my credit report is my business and i don't see how it should affect my getting a job or not. i kinda understand the nicotine testing. especially if the employer pays any toward the health ins. |
Date: 12/13/2011 9:04:00 PM From Authorid: 48250 it would seem discriminating to me too T/C |
Date: 12/13/2011 10:38:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101 Well, I know that on our campus at Edison, there is NO smoking. This past term I was on campus from noon to 5pm, and I didn't smoke the entire time I was there. On the weekends when I am with my husband smoking is not permitted. So from 8:00am to 3:00pm I simply don't smoke. My mom says I am sort of the exception to the status quo in that area. I am not a heavy smoker and do not need to have a cigarette dangling from my mouth regularly. I am also a clean smoker, in that my clothes do not smell, and while I smoke in my car no one can tell that I do. My skin doesn't smell like smoke, my teeth a gleaming white, and I don't get cranky when I haven't smoked in several hours. Truth be told if I need to I can stretch a pack of cigarettes to last me four days. And I've been smoking for 18 years. Most smokers say I'm not even a real smoker. But apparently I'm a real enough smoker that I can't get a job over it. Grrrr! |
Date: 12/13/2011 10:47:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101 Anedit score thing! ARGH!!! I worked REALLY hard to build my credit back up. I had been with the same emplyer for just shy of 10 years before the company went out of business. When they went belly up so did I. But I worked at it until I had credit that was good enough to buy my home. THE DAY I closed on my house I was laid off. Since then it's been a downward spiral. I went from working in a corporate setting to working as a housekeeper, so why can't employers look at that??? That I'm not afraid of hard work and determination? NO! They want to see my CREDIT SCORE??? It's infuriating! |
Date: 1/24/2012 10:16:00 PM From Authorid: 26598 I agree, and how about the 60 minute questionaire thats suppose to tell an employer If what you might do and not do on the job. If your not going to hire this person, then the employer is playing cruel games on someone who is broke. |

sorry to hear it shug. i just learned about the credit report/employment thing a couple of weeks ago. as for the smoking, i think that is ridiculous as well. sure, a company can crab about insurance costs, but as long as you are working, you are paying someone's insurance costs, right? as for me and mine, we pay almost $20,000 a year for ****** insurance for two adults and a child, plus by working, pay the insurance of others, so i really don't see how it would be anyone's business whether eithr of us smoked or not, and yet the potential is there. sounds like to me you are a really considerate smoker, a fact most folks would appreciate, i know i do. you need a nice e-cig. not quite regulated yet, get your nic fix, and it's not smoke. win win lol. good to see you shug, i've missed you guys. |
Date: 8/2/2012 8:43:00 PM From Authorid: 26598 I guess they had too many people taking smoke breaks or pretended to be nonsmokers to get the job and blew it when caught. I agree that there are unfair hoops employers make people who are out of work and starving. The one I dislike is the 90 minute personality quiz Kmart in South Carolina made me take and then auto message " We hire better qualifided people." I have 14 years in medical supply, surely I could handle stocking store shelves. |
Date: 1/28/2013 4:40:00 PM From Authorid: 66591 Yep, I know what ya mean about discrimination. I have a hard time finding a job just because I beat the crap out of my last two bosses. |

Nicotine is a very addictive drug. It is legal. But, everywhere that I've worked, the smokers tend to take breaks to go out and smoke. Is that fair to the other employees? It could also be an issue with health insurance. I know that it's not fair but life isn't fair. |
Date: 12/14/2016 9:42:00 AM From Authorid: 61013 If it is a position at a hospital I would understand them wanting someone free of nicotine because while working at a hospital you don't want to promote unhealthy lifestyles. It is just crazy that in this economy people are still doing things like that. |
