Holiday Silliness ... MrsK.

Are you offended by the term "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays"?

I am not offended by either. And frankly I'm a little perturbed at the importance people give to these two holiday sentiments.

First I think it should be well understood that there are MANY holidays celebrated throughout the winter months. Christmas, Channuka and Kwanzaa are just the most popular. There is also Yule, Las Posadas, the Japanese New Year, Eid-al-Adha, St. Lucias Day, Bodhi Day, the Lunar New Year and many, many more. Therefore, NO ONE owns the winter season. But more importantly, we all share the season, and the most important part of this busy time of the year is how we treat one another.

So lets not look at Merry Christmas like its' some sort of an insult. But at the same time lets not look at Happy Holidays as some sort of an exclusion.

Lets look at any holiday sentiment as a kindness shown between people.

After all, "Happy Holidays" isn't an exclusion, it's an inclusion of EVERYONE.

Date: 12/3/2011 12:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 62722    They have been trying to kill off Jesus Christ and the idea of him for two thousand years, and they will unless we stop them, today, they are trying to kill off the Christ in the name of political correctness and will stop at nothing, they kicked him out of the schools and yet they wonder why all the violence in the schools, so it does not bode well for Christians because they worry about hurting the feelings of the atheists, Islamics and I don't know what all, while ignoring the feelings of Christians

Date: 12/3/2011 8:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49101    I see nothing wrong nor am I insulted by Merry Christmas. But I don't see why people get offended or put off by Happy Holidays. It just seems more a Christian sentiment to WANT to include everyone, rather than exclude anyone.

Say Merry Christmas to your hearts content! I Do! But I don't begrudge a Happy Holiday.

Date: 12/3/2011 10:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 45684    All I can say about this is: I enjoy this time of the year, and I hope that whoever, celebrating whatever, does also.
Date: 12/4/2011 5:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    i am not offended if somebody wishes me happy holidays. and i don't care if they are offended if i wish them Merry Christmas. I won't take Christ out of Christmas but i'm not offended by those who do. and i won't be told that i have to say happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas.
Date: 12/24/2011 5:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 36079    I guess it matters the persons meaning behind saying it. Some peoples are opposed to "Christmas" so in saying Happy Holidays they are sending the notion of assimilation to christian terms the bird. A negative connotation if you will. Now those people who say Merry Xmas it is a direct assault, although I have heard people say it naively, obviously meaning no bad will. Since most our season's greetings are likely from strangers, is hard to tell what their aim is by not using Christmas. The safest bet is just to assume no ill-will and say the greeting back that is most meaningful for you!

I am so glad that my job that handles many international peoples allows us the choice to say our preferred greeting!
