Pet deposits?

My boyfriend has a cat and I have a cat. We moved into an apartment together in August and didn't pay the pet deposit because it is $400 per pet and non-refundable. Which I found to be outrageous. My last apartments it was $250 and only $100 was refundable. I got away with having my cat there because I never had to have anyone in my apartment to be aware that I had a cat.

Here they do monthly pest spraying and I have found maintenance in our apartment at times as well. I got a note on my door today saying that management is aware that we have 2 cats and we need to see them about paying $400 non-refundable pet fee per pet. "/

I don't want to have to give up our babies :( I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to get out of having to pay a pet deposit or any suggestions? I'm not working this semester until finals are over and then I'll only be working full time for a month and then go to part time next semester. So I don't really have any money. Nevertheless $800.

Bebe - my handsome boy

Date: 11/18/2011 5:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 5940    If you have signed a lease then you are not likely going to have a choice.... sorry. The only thing I can think of is if you know anyone who can care for your cats until you can pay the deposit or move.... or win the lottery.
Date: 11/18/2011 6:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 48250    Does the rental/lease stipulate a pet deposit?....I already know you do not want to give up your fur babies, & they are adorable!....I would either try to come up with the money somehow or try to find another place sweetheart...I'm sorry this is happening, most people who rent out their property "know" people love their pets and take advantage of the situation, the deposits are outrageous not to mention they are not refundable, that's a lot of money not to get back if you decide to move, of which they should not be allowed to do this....Did they notify you that they would be stopping by your place while you were gone? By Law they are required to give you a notice....and not only that but are supposed to do their "so-called inspecting" while you are there at home.....I hope every thing works out for you, I've had to pay outrageous fees for my *Girls* in the past, my family has cringed when I told them, but I paid it because my *girls* are every bit worth it to me....Best Wishes~.....T/C

...be a pain for your landlord and get a politician involved.
This doesn't sound right or legal.

Date: 11/18/2011 7:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 25481    when we moved into the apartment they asked if we had pets and we both signed a statement saying we didn't. They didn't become aware of them until now. yesterday I was changing and I heard someone come into my apartment but didn't see anyone. I walked out front and the pest control guy was there and asked me if we had any pest problems and I said no and he said okay he had just sprayed the kitchen. Then this afternoon I find the notice on our door saying to come to the office to discuss payment for our 2 cats. I'm trying to find laws to help me out with this, but I am not having any luck yet.
Date: 11/19/2011 3:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 64933    If you have any depression issures and see a Dr. you may be able to get a letter saying its his medical advice you have a pet. I know a lady who lived in a low-income baised apartment. They found out she had animals (she wasn't allowed because of same deposits & lease) (down-payments- extra a month) So she went to her doctors and he wrote a (script) for her to have one. (this may only help for 1 pet/ sorry If nothing else it may buy you some time.
Date: 11/19/2011 7:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 25481    I do have depression and that was in fact what made me adopt Bebe was my old therapist and doctor both told me to consider adopting a pet to deal with the break up with my (now) ex-fiance.
