Addiction as defined by the dictionary is the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.
Sounds pretty scary when put that way doesn't it? That's because an addiction is much more serious than one might begin to think. An addiction robs us of ourselves and others around us. People with addiction steal from the families, take advantage of friends and hurt those who they love. An addiction is a selfish act and people will do whatever, no matter who gets hurt in the process, to act out their addiction. They don't care about those around them all they care is that they "get their fix"
Addiction as seen in the definition can be much more than a substance abuse. Anything that takes over our lives is an addiction. Once addicted that is all you can think about. Getting in that last cigarette, gotta have my beer, not going to bed on time for work in the morning because there is too much good stuff on TV, neglecting your duties because you have to pass the next level in your video game, not spending anytime with your family because no matter how you try your house still isn't clean enough, spending every waking moment at the gym instead of with friends because your mussels still aren't as large as you want them. Addictions rob us of our lives.
Even more destructive is when our addictions get out. It's hurtful to those who care about us to learn of our addictions, especially for a spouse or partner. It is hard to learn that your wife/husband has not only been hiding something from you but also places this item higher than you. You then begin wonder if he/she has been working late, or if they really are going to their friends house to play pool, who knows what they are up to when your not around. Parents will begin to question themselves, "Did I do something wrong raising him?" Your friends will question your loyalty to them and your children will never look at you the same way.
Addiction is something we all face, no matter what you think we all have them. I urge you, if your addiction is too overwhelming and is controlling your life and ruining please get help. You must learn to control your addiction and not let it control you.
