There is a story and was a place in Grapevine Tx. (town sits on the northwest side of the DFW airport),that was shared by youth especially in 1970's-1980's of a place on the outskirts of town that was said to be haunted. If you grew up '80's a least it would have been one of the first old stories you would have heard about especially if you lived in Grapevine and surrounding towns.
Well it started around 1970,there used to be an old farm house that sat on top of a slope off of Dove Road around Grapevine Lake what was then still a rural area. For certain the little old chapel used in the movie "Lonesome Dove" is further down the road from there which is who Dove Road had been named after. Anyway as the story goes this old house burned to the ground on Halloween night and a couple and their baby who lived there all parished. Afterwards all that was left was the cement stairs that led up to the empty top of the hill, which had 13 steps, hence the name. From that time on it was said that every Halloween at midnight, the "ghost house" would appear on fire and you about hear the family's screams, after a few moments it would vanish .
Youth visited the spot through out the year and try to dare anyone to climb the old stairway to the top. I have a old classmate friend who grew up in Grapevine and had visited the site as kid with his two older brothers who were already teens in the late '70's one Halloween to see it for themselves like many other youths over the years for the novelty of a "scare thrill". From what he remembered it was creepy,he told me at least he had his big brothers to cling to at that moment who he remembers were also freaked. He told me they went and parked at a gas station because it had LIGHTS,to chill out for a while before heading home on the other side of town where they lived.
Now heres the thing with the "Was" as far as with the place goes. Unfortunatly in 1986 construction was started to widen Dove Road and the steps were taken out and the hill lowered. The way I know is thats what we found when my bud took me thereI wonder if the people who worked there ever experienced anything wierd? Danny3
