The day of Jamie's big day the house was decorated with pirate flags, there was a treasure chest full of chocolate gold foil coins, and for Jamie's gift, and entertainment for the guests he was given a treasure map to the back yard. After a long exhausted search in the yard the quest finally ended at the sandbox where there was an X marked in the sand. Buried not too deep was a treasure chest with a DVD collection of Errol Flynn movies.
"This is a wonderful party you threw him," Frank, Will's father said. "Too bad Will was never like this. Not that I minded he was so into his studies, after all he turned out well but I wish he had been more of a child like Jamie."
Just then Jamie ran in "Grandpa, look what I got," he said showing Frank his new movies.
"Jamie, I got something for you too," his grandpa said leading him and his friends into the living room.
He handed Jamie a wrapped gift which was obviously a new book. "Wow grandpa, this is awesome," Jamie said looking over the achient looking highly decorated book titled "Your Adventure Begins Here." But when he opened the book all he could see was old yellowed blank pages, "Grandpa there is nothing in this book."
"That's because you are to make your story. Legend has it that this book once belonged to a pirate name One Eyed Jack that lived here in Florida. He was going to use this journal to write down his adventures but died before he ever had the chance to use it.
This book is said to have the power to give you the adventure that you write in it and everyone wanted to get their hands on it. Jack was killed for this book, then that person was killed for it and then the next person who ended up with the book buried it in fear of anyone finding out he had acquired the prized book.
That man that buried the book was your great grandfather, my father, ex pirate Cannon Ball Pete. He was called Cannon Ball because survived a cannon blast that took out his entire crew except him. Later when he was older, in last years of his life. he took me to where he had the book buried and dug it up and gave it to me.
He told me the story of the book when I was a child but told me he would never give the book until he was sure it was safe to do so. I never wrote in the book myself. I was an adult by then and already had a child of my own, your father. I tried to give your father the book but he had no interest in it so I decided to save it for the grandchild I hoped to one day have and now I give the book to you."
"Wow," Jamie said in amazement, "Is all that true?"
"Everything I said about the origin of the book and the pirates is true, as to what happens when you write in the book I have no idea if that is true since I never tried it out."
==================
That evening Jamie sat up in his bed looking over the ancient journal wondering what his adventure would end up being. "Time for you to go to bed little man." Jamie's dad said as he came into the room.
"Why don't you like adventure dad?" Jamie asked.
He lay his son down into the bed and pulled the covers up and said, "I don't hate adventure. I just always chose to live in real life. I didn't like fantasy, I was only interested in what I knew was real. Every child has their own interests, mine was in science. But to say I didn't like adventure would be wrong.
I have never told anyone this but as a child I would always dream of being a famous scientist traveling the world discovering great things, finding lost cities, helping animals in need. I had fantasies of adventure too."
"Why didn't you tell anyone?"
"I was afraid my friends would laugh at me for having crazy dreams. Though I am sure we were all having that same dream. Difference between me and you is that you live through your dreams, I didn't. I think back to my childhood and wished I had done that, wish I had been more of a child when I had the chance, wish I had taken that book and I don't want you to give up on your dreams. I want you to take this book and write your grandest adventure in it."
He got up to leave turning out the bedroom light and Jamie said, "Why didn't you become a scientist?"
"I didn't think it was a realistic dream," Will closed the door and found Janet in the hallway. "How long were you standing there for?"
"Long enough," Janet said and gave Will a big hug. You can join Unsolved Mysteries and post your own mysteries or interesting stories for the world to read and respond to Click hereScroll all the way down to read replies.Show all stories by Author: 34663 ( Click here )
