I know in NC, for non emergency situations, you dial *HP for Highway Patrol, it's mainly to quickly report litterers, possible drunk drivers, minor wrecks, such as running into a ditch, collisions with a deer, or downed trees or what not so they can get the proper people out there to take care of it (if you're not in redneck country). |

In Cali (if it hasn't changed) when you use a call box or cell phone it automatically goes to CHP if you dial 911 - although some phones are programed with the emergency "9" key which I guess is 911. But if you call 911 from a land line then you get routed to the local dispatch center. Here in Austria EVERYBODY |
