"Mommy mommy!" the girl screamed as she woke up from her sleep.
The girl's mother rushed into her room, "What's wrong Bessie?" Her mother asked.
"There is a monster under my bed, it attacked me," the girl said crying.
"You know there are no such things as monsters Bessie,"
"But this was real, it was big and hairy and scary like a big dog and it bit me, look."
The mother was paralyzed in fear at what she say, a very large bite wound like that from a dog. 8 Year old Bessie had been terrified of dogs most her life ever since she was bitten as a toddler and for months have complained of the monster dog under her bed, a monster that until now Mrs. Johnson didn't believe was real.
The girl was rushed to the emergency room where doctors agreed it was a dog bite and from a rather large dog, perhaps a pit bull or rottweiler but there is no way any dog could have been in Bessie's room. A police report was filed as well just in case a stray dog is found that is some how breaking into homes.
The agency got a hold of the police report as it does all police reports. Agent V was called into his bosses office, "Agent V I have a new case for you," he placed the report in front of the agent and he thumbed through it.
"You want me to look into a dog attack?" The agent questioned.
"Not just any dog attack agent. This is an odd case. No way a dog could have been in that room, and the girl just so happens to be terrified of dogs as well. In addition we sent an agent to question the doctor who looked at the child. He admitted it's a dog bite but left something out when talking to the mother Mrs. Johnson, this bite is far too big to be from any normal dog. Find out what bit this child and put a stop to it."
Naturally the first thought in the agent's mind was werewolf but no werewolf would ever dare attack a child, and they don't just bite and leave, this has to be something else but what.
The agent flashed an official looking police badge to Mrs. Johnson and asked to have a look around the property. The agent found no foot prints, scratch marks, diggings, droppings or any sign of animal activity at all on the property.
"Officer did you find anything?" Mrs. Johnson asked.
"Nothing, do you mind if I look around your daughter's room?"
The woman showed the agent to the child's room where she was currently playing. "Bessie, this is officer Sims," that was the name on the agents fake badge, "He is going to look around your room for a bit so let's leave him alone in here."
"Actually if you don't mind I would like to talk to Bessie as well." The woman agreed and stayed in the room with the agent and Bessie. "So Bessie, tell what did this monster look like?" the agent asked as he was looking under bed.
The shy little girl said, "Well, it was very big, had a big fangs, and it would come out from under my bed and scare me. Last night is the first time it ever attacked me, it bit me as I screamed and ran back under the bed."
The agent emerged from under the bed and asked, "Did it walk on two legs like a person or on all fours like a dog?"
"All fours."
"Do you think you could draw me a picture of the animal?"
The girl nodded and got out her color crayons and some paper and scribbled out a picture of what looked like nothing more than a very big dog.
"Excuse me officer, but why these questions, the doctor told us what bit her?"
The agent looked at the drawing and answered, "Just some follow up questions that's all." He stood up and then asked, "Do you mind if I see the bite wound?"
The mother was reluctant to remove the child's bandage but agreed. The bite was on the girl's lower leg, as if she was kicking at the animal and it bit her, and it looked like nothing more than a regular dog bite aside from the over sized wounds.
The agent thanked the two for their time and walked outside into his unmarked car and drove off. "I don't know what to make of this one boss," he said over bluetooth headset. "From the bite wound, girl's description of the animal, the drawing she made and what the doctor said to the other agent it appears to be a very big dog, only thing is there is no evidence a dog was ever in that room or on that property."
"Whatever it is, we must find it and stop it before it attacks again and if I were you I would keep a look out on that house, it might appear again."
The agent agreed and hung up the phone. The agent had never had such a case before. He dealt with mutant animals before but none that could appear from no where.
Later that evening another police report came in that the agent was called to investigate. It was in the same theme as the other case. A man who was terrified of bees was rushed to the emergency after he called 911 about being attacked by giant hornets. When paramedics arrived they were surprised to see no hornets on the man's property and even more surprised at the size of the sting wounds. Unfortunately the man died in the hospital.
"Agent V, whatever this is it is starting an epidemic, this must be stopped right away!" His boss exclaimed loudly from the other side of his desk. The agent hardly gets yelled but this is turning into a very odd and very deadly case.
Over the next week there had been several more cases where people have died or been injured by the thing they fear most but when authorities arrived at each scene there is no sign of anything. There were no leads at all and no clues. That was until one man faced his fear and survived unharmed.
The agent headed to a Mr. Duncan's house using his F.B.I. disguise. "What can I do for you agent...?" the man asked as the agent flashed his badge.
"Agent Sims," Sims is the name used for all aliases by the agent, "I have a few follow questions about what you reported yesterday to the police yesterday."
"I told them everything I could, not sure they believed any of it though." Mr Duncan answered.
"That's why I am here, now start at the beginning and try to leave anything out."
"Well," the man scratched at his balding head recalling the incident, "I came home from work, I do construction work for a living which isn't easy because I am claustrophobic and I often have to get into tight space. Well as I walked down the hall way and the walls started come in on me.
"Doctors told me it was mind playing tricks on me because of my phobia, but I know it was real, I could feel the walls pressing against my skin," he lifted his shirt sleeve, "You can even some bruising where it pressed up on me. I then took a deep breathe and repeated to myself, wide open spaces, it's a relaxation technique my doctor taught me for if I get nervous in a situation like that.
"Just then the walls pushed back into place and swear I heard a voice, I couldn't tell what it said, perhaps it didn't really say anything or maybe it was in my head I don't know. I went to see my doctor to talk about this but he didn't seem to believe anything I said about,
I also informed the police afterward about the possibility of an intruder in my house but after mentioning what happened they shunned me away as if I were a nut, so how did you know about this any how?"
"Thank you for all the information Mr Duncan," the agent said as he walked out the door. He called up his boss in the car, "I have a lead, I think we might be dealing with a super mutant but until we can actually find him we can't stop him."
"This is good news," his boss replied, "Now that he knows we are onto him he might slip up allowing us to catch him."
"Or even better," the agent replied, "He might come for me."
"How are you going to fight something that attacks people with their biggest fears?"
"You forget, I fear nothing."
After questioning several of the local creatures in the city and finding nothing about a new mutant in town the agent decided to use one of the agencies other informants.
The agent drove downtown and parked in front of a small dark shop with a sign in the window reading "Madam Sonja the Mystic." Right as the agent opened the door a voice from the backroom said, "Agent V, welcome and what can I do for you?"
The Agent walked through the beaded curtains where a woman dressed as a gypsy with long hair in wrapped in a scarf, bangles nearly up to each elbow, several pair of big hoop earrings in each ear and colorful makeup. "I am looking for what we suspect to be a new supermutant in the area but none of the creatures have ever seen anything and no other informants are proving useful,"
The old woman cut him off, "What you seek is not human, it is a being trapped in our world and seeking it's revenge on man kind for what they did to him."
"What did they do to him?" The agent asked
The woman went into a trance for several minutes and came out of it quickly looking terrified. "In Salem, back during the witch trials there was one man who was tried for being a witch. I couldn't get his name but they tortured the man with the things he feared most. The man eventually died from the fear and after death made a deal with Satan. He now roams the Earth seeking out his vengeance on descendants of those who killed him. Beware this one Agent V, he knows all your fears, and I know you are going to say you are without fear but no one is."
"Where can I find him?"
"Find the descendants and will find him."
The agent thanked the woman and headed back to his office and started to do some research. It turned out the old woman was right. After hours of searching he found all eight victims were related, very distantly but they were. He managed to also trace these people to four witch hunters back in Salem who died under mysterious circumstances.
According to Salem legend the spirit of man wrongfully killed as a witch killed the men using their greatest fears, just as they did to him years earlier. Then after their death several of their family members were killed as well in these ways and the rest of the family fled the country in fear.
There are still many living descendants of these witch hunters alive today and many dead as well, most of which died from their biggest fears. There weren't many of them living in New York, but out of all those he knew where to start, with the survivors.
Out of the eight attacks only 3 survived, Bessie Johnson, Carl Duncan and one the agent hadn't talked to yet, Tim Spacey. The agent decided to start with Tim.
After tracking down the man he went to his place of work where he should be this morning but he couldn't find at his desk. He worked at a local bank as a loan manager. "Can I help you with something?" one of the employees asked.
"I'm looking for Mr. Spacey."
"I am sorry, he is no longer with us." The woman replied
"What do you mean?" The agent was hoping it wasn't what he thought she meant.
"Last week Mr. Spacey feel off his roof, God knows how he got up there, the man was terrified of heights, well the doctors released him with only a broken leg, turned out he had a blood clot from the fall and he died two days ago."
"I am sorry to hear that."
"were you close to Tim?"
"No," the agent said and headed out the door.
