Standard Tipping

When you go out to eat how do you determine what you're going to tip?

Almost always I go in expecting to tip $10 or more. If my bill is higher I will tip more. If my bill is $5 I usually tip $5. I went out to eat the other night with my boyfriend for our weekly date night and we ordered an appetizer. The person that brought out our food, brought us the wrong appetizer. I sent it back (I hate being 'that' table). Our waitress came out and apologized and I told her it wasn't an issue, we were both servers and know that sometimes people accidentally bring out the wrong food or whatever.

I have been waiting tables for the past few months and I honestly hate it. I am a server in a restaurant in a mall. I hate having to stereotype people but it's hard not to when the same group of people do the exact same thing countless times.

Typically we aim for 20% or better. I have heard in some states that servers get paid minimum wage. I have been a server in Alabama and Texas and we get $2.15-$2.50 an hour plus tips. AND we pay a tipout. Meaning, where I currently work - if you order a drink, I have to tip the bartender a percentage. If you order sushi - I have to tip the sushi chefs a percentage. We also tipout our server assistants/bussers.

Some days I have really good tables and some days I don't. Sometimes we have servers who have customers who blatantly cross out the tip section on credit card slips or fill in $0.00.

What makes me more mad than anything in the world is not getting tipped. The only time that would EVER be acceptable is if you went into the kitchen prepared all of your own food, got your own drinks and served yourself. When I don't get tipped, I end up having to pay to be at work.

So this is kinda of a rant/question...I just wanted to see how other parts of the world are...

If you are unsure of tipping, I found this tip guide which I found to be helpful when it comes to other areas that receive tips besides the food industry.

:)

Tip the people that help make your life easier!

Date: 8/9/2011 2:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 64863    My husband is a massage therapist and he gets upset when customers don't tip well. Some customers assume he already gets paid a lot but he only gets a percentage of the massage cost. He used to tip poorly at restaurants and he and I would argue about it because I like to leave good tips. Now he has a respect for the servers thanks to his career, and they get at least 20%.
Date: 8/9/2011 2:13:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 25481    I never knew massage therapists worked to receive tips! See, things like that are so important to know!
Date: 8/9/2011 3:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 64365    When I dine out I tip really well
Date: 8/9/2011 6:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    My standard is 20% of the bill, but I'll tip more if I get really excellent service, and almost always round up. We were at a nice restaurant recently where we sat outside. We were the only people sitting out, but the waitress was so good, as soon as my glass of water was half full she was there refilling it, we tipped her 30%. I think out of the entire service industry, waiters and waitresses are consistently the best at providing customer service and service in general.
Date: 8/9/2011 6:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    I have never gotten a massage, but I wasn't aware you tipped massage therapists either. that's good to know.
Date: 8/9/2011 9:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 64819    It all depends. If we have a server who has a good personality, and will make jokes and be an all around great server we'll leave a really good tip, we like funny yet insulting servers, but in a good way. But my bf's pet peeve is running out of tea, if he runs out of tea (given the place isn't really busy), or our server has a poor attitude, s/he will get little to no tip.
Date: 8/9/2011 9:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 3680    I always tip 15%. No matter how good the service is, or isn't, I still tip them. You have know idea what kind of a day that person may be having, and to leave them a good tip regardless can make our break their day.
Date: 8/9/2011 9:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    You mentioned a tip guide.. is it online? What is the addy to that? No matter for me, because when I go out, the server gets upwards of 35% of the total bill. (upwards meaning better than I expected, the better the tip, up to 50%). If the food is great, I ask to see the cook and tip another 10% of the bill, to them directly. If all is well over what my expectations are, I will ask to speak to the manager and give a great rating to the restaurant and their staff. I let my server know what I am doing so they are not freaked out when I ask to see the manager, Lol.

If I am just going in though, for coffee and a muffin, I will pay a tip the same amount as the bill itself. (100%).

I am also one of those people that will go online to their web page (if one is available) and leave a comment, good or not so good... depends on what my experience was with that restaurant

Date: 8/9/2011 10:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    And like most people, I still leave a tip of some kind, even if I wasn't happy with the service. I don't feel morally right if I don't at least leave something..
Date: 8/9/2011 10:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 3680    "Don't eat yellow snow" is always a good tip.
Date: 8/9/2011 10:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 45684    Having been a bartender, a waitress, and a massage therapist, I have a tendency to over tip. Bartenders I usually tip after first and last drinks, sometimes in between depending on how long we are there. Waitresses ar 20% unless really bad or really good. As for massage therapists and hairdressers I tip between $5-$20 depending on what service I get and how good it was. When I was doing massage, I was making around 40/hour, so I didn't expect tips, but they were nice when I got them. As for the people who don't tip waitresses at all, my philosophy is if you can afford to eat out, you can afford to tip. Like you said, waitresses generally make way under minimum wage, and depend on tips to balance it out.
Date: 8/9/2011 12:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    About 10% is the norm for me, but here in Europe waiters tend to be paid more highly and a service charge is often included in the bill.
Date: 8/9/2011 12:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 15157    My Phone has a Tip Calulator...but we usually tip well when we go out..but for 2 tacos and a coffee...we tip 2 dollars. Now I always put myself in the shoes of the waitress.
Date: 8/9/2011 12:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 3263    I could've used that yellow snow tip about 25 years ago :|

Anyways, I always tip well, but if I get crappy service then the tip goes down, and if it was really bad (like the last pedicure I had) I don't tip at all - but that is rare.

Date: 8/9/2011 5:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 46035    I say 20 % for tip. ANd sometimes more it the server it really doing a god job. But when I pay w/ credit card I cross out the tip secion & PAY the TIP w/ CASH. Because the server will get the tip right away & not later when the credit card purchases are tallied out.
Date: 8/9/2011 8:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 64942    Double whatever the tax comes to...
Date: 8/9/2011 10:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 63366    Crossing out the tip on a credit card reciept is perfectly acceptable and encuraged by all credit card companies(if you tip in cash). Because if you don't a dishonest person could enter info after you sign it and rip you off. Other than that I start at 20% and work down from there if the service or experiance isn't good. Remember tipping is volentary and should never be expected. Most people don't get tipped for doing their jobs I know I don't.
Date: 8/9/2011 11:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    two or five bucks usually
Date: 8/10/2011 7:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 7341    I tip anywhere from 15% to 20%...just depending on the service.
Date: 8/10/2011 8:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 3680    I leave my tip in pennies. 1,000 of them.
Date: 8/10/2011 8:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    We usually tip about 15%

Eating out has gotten so expensive that we don't really go out to eat very often.

Date: 8/10/2011 8:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    well when I cross out the tip on the credits slip usually I have left cash on the table for my server. I would rather in my mind make sure it went straight to them and not to some "community pot" that gets split evenly among the servers. I normally tip good unless my service is bad or really laxed. The "tip-o-meter" is my glass of tea. If it stays empty too long the tip goes down. The plates can be high as the ceiling and trash on the floor. Doesnt matter. My glass. If it's full the tip does in fact get higher. If the waitress talks nicley and socialise's thats no prob good the tip stays up there. But tea is my factor overall.

Date: 8/10/2011 8:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 54570    Oh and sometimes I have just told the waitress whenever they asked what would we like to drink that I would just like to have a pitcher of sweet tea they have (to my suprise) left a whole pitcher of tea there with long straw in it fer me!!!!! Those peeps got a very healthy tip that night.

Date: 8/10/2011 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 12103    I have a tip question. Sometimes we go to takeout asian bbq place. We go in, order, they put it in a takeout box and we pay. There is room for a "tip"..I never tip them and I'm not sure I see why I would? I don't tip the mcdonalds/burgerking/subway people. Insight?

This isnt the only kinda place that there is room for a tip amount at a food establishment where I take a order to go.

Date: 8/11/2011 7:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    i always zero out the tip line on the receipt unless i am leaving the tip on my card. i usually leave a cash tip. if the service is bad i don't leave a tip. normally i over tip but there have been times when i don't tip at all. like when the place isn't that busy but i still can't get a refill or some ketsup or whatever. when the waiter doesn't come back to the table at some point during the meal he/she doesn't get a tip. i'm not paying somebody for a job NOT well done.
one night we were at Logans Roadhouse and part of our order got dropped on the floor a few feet from out table. we just laughed and got over it but the waitress and manager didn't think it was so funny and the manager came out and told us our meal was free. we only had to pay for drinks because the were alcoholic and she wasn't allowed to give away alcohol. our bill came to around 12.00 and i added a 20.00 tip because the waitress was so freaked out.

Date: 8/13/2011 7:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    I like that Mama Bug. Knowing the manager they wouldve made her pay for a portion of the meal. And Princess Jen they print that out on every reciept. Computer standard. But also they hope for that little bit of extra tip money
