Update on the job interview ~*~*Mayuka*~*~

So, just a refresher, I'm a candidate for a management position for the restaurant chain I work for. Everything went well. I passed the interview, BUT, there aren't any openings right now. :-/ Well, everything happens for a reason. The only thing my area director thought I need to work on is my leadership skills (commanding attention, asserting my authority, etc). Something that also comes with time and experience.

SO, my wonderful management team is really supportive and will be giving me more responsiblities via projects, etc to develop my leadership skills. I'll even be going to other stores as manager assistant since I won't know anyone there and maybe be able to assert myself more. Yeah, I think I'm too personally involved/have friends at work that I'm worried about upsetting a few of them. But, this restaurant is my livelihood and my real friends should be able to separate work from our friendship and not take things personally. Same goes for myself. I'm putting work before anything else now because I really got to prove to my managers that I'm ready to be a manager.

It does put a lot of pressure on me, but I know I can do this! I'm on the right path, I just hope they don't "forget" about me as a candidate because, who really knows how long til a position opens up. I mean, my general manager thinks it won't be too long because he says managers "quit" all the time.

So, we'll see what happens! I'll keep you all posted. Thank you so much for your support.

Date: 7/22/2011 2:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 21903    Woo! Great news! Hopefully something will open up soon! like you said, your friends should be able to separate friendship from work and if they can't its their short-coming and they aren't really good friends anyways. Hope something opens up for you soon!
Date: 7/22/2011 4:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    You're right. Everything happens for a reason. You will probably learn all you need to by the time a management position does open up for you. So, congratulations, sweetie. Hard work does pay off. HUGS

Date: 7/22/2011 4:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 23963    I never became friends with my fellow co-workers. This leads to problems when one is moved up into higher positions. My rule is "Keep work, work". Of course I was always friendly and respectful to my coworkers, just never hung out with them after work. This might be something you may want to consider when working with future coworkers. You will need to be an example in a leadership position that includes being fair to all and seeing all equally. If you become their personal friend, it will be too hard for you to discipline them when the time comes.

I know that you wanted to become a teacher and I know that is still your goal. Are you sure that this is what you really want, to become a manager? I have to tell you that a few years ago I was a trainer and leader for two big restaurants. I enjoyed the job, but over time it became quite tiring, hectic, and I wanted to focus on teaching. I was stressed out all the time coming up with new ways of training people, corporate managers always on my back when things went wrong even when most of them were not my fault and much more. I got tired of it and left to do something that I finally did enjoy and that was teaching fitness. I am definitely happier now and make more money than I did before. Restaurant Management is a great job if you enjoy that type of work, and if you handle stress well. Yes its stressful! LOL. Consider all the pros and cons before taking the position. You mentioned many times you wanted to teach. I wouldn't give up that dream on something you might not be happy with. Live your dreams my friend!

I wish you the best of luck Mayuka, I am sure this will be great experience for you if you get the position.

Sometimes it's hard to lead, but once we convince ourselves that we work for ourselves and in the best interest of company AND crew, leading gets a lot easier. Take care of you and Write on......
