It has been over a year now, yet she still has those horrid dreams. He hits her, she cries, and the world comes to an end. His voice still echos in her memory. His spiritless laugh still drains her emotions, toys with her thoughts, steals her happiness.
Life has been very unstable for poor Katherine. Living out of cheap motels, looking over her shoulder constantly, working odd jobs. Everything that she dreamed her life could be, came to an abrupt end, that night when she decided to meet him.
No one knew what had happened to her after she boarded that bus. Every now and then, she would see a news segment dedicated to those who were missing, and she was featured. As she watched, his gruesome face would appear, begging for her return, apologizing for his mistakes. He lied to the reporter, her family, the world. He convinced them she was crazy, psychotic, delusional, in need of proper medical attention.
"I need to continue to stay low," she whispered. "If I'm discovered, they would incarcerate me!"
The beautiful blond and blue eyed girl became a dark haired raven. Her violet contacts covered her deep colored eyes. Her attire became dark. She was a complete 180 from where she once had been, from who she once was. He knowingly destroyed her. He pierced her soul with his cruel words and cold actions. That night, in the slums of town, she searched out her illegal documents. Papers that would give her a new identity, from people she would never have associated with.
Men and women walked past her in this forbidden land. Unaware of who she really was and the bounty over her head. Deeper and deeper she traveled into the darkness. Homeless drank as people were selling their souls to strangers. This end of the world was a morbid place. Every now and then a car would stop near her, and she would run. Scared to discover the truth behind their tinted widows. Scared to change her destiny once more. Smart enough to know what road not to travel. She would never sell her soul to this part of the burdened world. In the dark alley way, she found her light, the man who would unknowingly help her flight.
"Whadda want sweetie pie?" He hollered from behind a red burning cigarette.
"I need a new me." Katherine whispered in a shaky voice.
"Man, I ain't got time, you po. I know who you really are, I know. I ain't stupid!"
"Sir, Chester sent me here. He said you could help me. Please, help me." She whispered once more.
"Follow me, it ain't safe out here." Said the man as he led her into a broken apartment building.
The 5 story complex held few residents. It's boarded up windows, bug infested walls, rotten linoleum floors warned potential tenants of their fates if they were to dare enter. "He's leading me to my death?" She thought.
In the company of a complete stranger, she followed him into the darkness at the end of that hallway.
"Apartment 702, this is were I will parish. This is were I led myself. This will be my fault." Silently she whispered.
