In an interesting turn of events, Judge Hellman had decided to allow five prison snitches to tesify on behalf of Amanda Knox, claiming that they could clear her name. Another interesting fact is that during the first trial, the existence of these witnesses was well known, but the judge refused to allow their testimony, stating it was unreliable. Under Italian law, any prisoner that writes to the court with claim to an ongoing trial must be heard an investigated. It is true that many do do under false pretense to earn a day out of prison, but the law is the law, and during the first trial, it was not observed.
For those out of the loop, Amanda Knox is the Seattle exchange student accused of murder. Though evidence is dwindling, and it has been nearly proven that the prosecution fabricated both the DNA evidence and time of death, Amanda Knox remains in prison along with former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito. It has also been noted that Italy is famous for murder convictions that are overturned on appeal, which gives new hope to the Knox case in the coming months.
In spite of the appearance of corruption, Italian president Giorgio Napolitano states that he will not intervene in the Knox trial, claiming that justice must be allowed to take it's course. Last month lawmaker Rocco Girlanda and eleven other Italian lawmakers requested a probe into the Perugian law offices claiming that a miscarriage of justice had occured against Knox who is now serving a 26 year sentence.
