I think it'll swing back to tangibale....cause if you think about it what happends when there's no eletrictity and people can't access all there fancy gadgets. |
Date: 3/31/2011 1:07:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28848 I think there will be a time in the near future where paper books are a rare commodity. |
Date: 3/31/2011 1:59:00 PM From Authorid: 27705 I love my tangible books i will never switch to an E-reader or any of that tech. stuff. I have always said I will have a library in my house and i am making it happen! |
Date: 3/31/2011 2:22:00 PM From Authorid: 37150 I don't care, I love to have the book in my hand! The Kindle would be the only thing I'd invest in, but it still doesn't replace pages to me. As for CDs well, yeah, those seem to be obsolete. The only main problem I have with digital media is that it can be lost so easily. Your MP3 crashes and that's it for your music. Hope you have it backed up somewhere otherwise you'll have to download and reload them into your MP3. Blah. MP3's aren't cheap either. The E Readers are decently priced, I think. |
Date: 3/31/2011 3:32:00 PM From Authorid: 64365 I would rather read a book than carry something around with me I would have to be careful about not breaking. It costs a lot less to replace a book, than it would be to replace one of those. I wouldn't mind having one for all the other things you can do with it, but geez...that's an expensive bookshelf, in my opinion....and the downloads cot about as much as a 1/2 off hardcover, or a paperback novel. |
Date: 3/31/2011 3:34:00 PM From Authorid: 64365 sorry about the typos...my keys are not functioning properly...or perhaps it's my finger sand the fact I am not wearing my glasses, right now...I'll stick wit hthe keys... |
Date: 3/31/2011 6:11:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 28848 Regi I've always wanted to have my own library too. Mayuka I thought of that too. If the system crashes and the downloads have not been backed up, you will have to purchase everything again. That could get expensive. Nani I would worry about breaking it too or someone stealing it. The Kindle used to be really expensive, around $400 I think. But the new one is only $139, which would still be a lot to replace imo. |
Date: 3/31/2011 8:26:00 PM From Authorid: 37843 You're right. I never had an 8 track player but the rest I have, and like you I prefer books. I think it's because computer gremlins tend to follow me... digital devices usually are not my friends. I think it's dangerous to rely so heavily on electronic devices, they can be so fickle, and like you said what if one day there is a black out? A lot of people would be in a lot of trouble for however long the blackout lasts... |

Speaking as a book-dealer, I can tell you that independent bookstores all over the world are dropping like flies. Those who enjoy hard-copy books are part of what are called "gray readers", meaning they are primarily older people. E-book sales rose 165% since last year, and are increasingly popular with young people. However, E-books and computers remain extremely vulnerable to electromagnetic interference. All it will take is one significant solar flare, or a terrorist nuke to put out an EMP--electromagnetic pulse--which will disrupt the Internet and wipe out all E-books. Also, i you drop a Kindle in the bathtub, it's ruined. A hard-copy book can be dried out. If there is an EMP incident, then that future world will be dependent upon printed books from the past. That would be an interesting irony, I think! |

I personally prefer a book. I have a few of them on my Ipod, but it doesn't compare to a book. It's sad that a lot of book stores are closing.. There's a school here, (I think) that gave every student an ipad. That way they don't have to carry around a ton of books. Sad, huh? What if they break it? |
Date: 4/1/2011 7:26:00 PM From Authorid: 62993 I prefer printed books myself, but probably in 20-30 years, I doubt there will be many bookstores, if any at all. |
Date: 4/4/2011 10:23:00 AM From Authorid: 4887 It'll be like, back in the day.. when books were a rarity, and only royalty had them :/ |

Hi Release Me, I agree with you. I prefer a book over any digital reader. I am not a big technology fan and I have expressed that opinion many times. Yes, I do own a laptop and a cell phone but these items do not define me or rule my life. I am scared for our future. Did you know the air today is the most polluted? Not only because of environmental factors and human pollution but because of radiation and digital satellites everywhere. But, back to books... I think people are getting a little too fond of the instant gratification of digital devices and we should not rely on them. I already see big changes with book stores closing and college campus' digitally downloading text books. My Spanish course was done online... I mean really? I also still have VHS and a tape player. I am fond of these things I grew up with and it really hasn't been that long that they should be so out of date. I just started a DVD collection but now there is Blu Ray but now there is instant download or computer viewing... what's next? Want to know something scary I seen at a workshop at my college about technology? They are working on computers where you wear something around your wrist or neck and you are the computer. You stand against a wall and it projects onto the surface and you can dial a phone number and call someone or surf the web... insanely crazy if you ask me. And I won't even go into possible health problems that can be caused by this... good post, and I will check out your other post as well. Thanks for writing. |
Date: 7/3/2011 2:35:00 AM From Authorid: 61968 Its a scary thought. I too enjoy picking up a book and turning the pages. I wont buy one of these ereaders until the day that I cant get my books from a store. |
