It was a cold dark and rainy night. I was in my red pickup truck. I could hear the game on the radio, top of the 6th inning Red Sox are down by two. They had men on the corners. The batter had 3 balls on him.

I saw a woman in a red rain jacket, no umbrella. Strike one. I could see her blond hair – completely, soaked. I rolled down my window as I pull up to her. Strike two.

“Need a lift?”

I could see her sparkling blue eyes as she opened the door.

“Thanks.” She said.

Strike three.

She hopped in. “There hasn’t been anybody on the roads at all tonight.”

“I’m not surprised, the weather the way it is.” I asked her, “Where are you headed?”

“Just anywhere warm.”

“There’s a diner up the road, hungry?”

She looked at me with those blue eyes, “I can eat. Sure.”

It took twelve pitches to get the next batter out. I pull into the parking lot not knowing what happened with two on, two out and two runs down.

The place is deserted; I looked at the cook and said, “You don’t seem very busy Cliff. Did you poison all your customers?”

“Very funny Pete, two bowls of tomato soup on the house. Now what can I get ya?”

“Me, I’ll take the biggest steak you got with all the trimmings.”

Cliff snickered, “What a gentleman. And you miss? You have to excuse Pete; he hasn’t had a date in years.”

“Steak raw and bloody please.”

“Ya got it kid, two steaks on the way.”

I looked at her and said, “I don’t even know your name.”

“Cheryl.” She said, “Let me read your palm please.”

I haven’t had my palm read in many years, I figured, let her tell a story.

“You have a very long life line and riches beyond your wildest dreams are in store for you.”

I heard the door behind me open, I didn’t have a chance to turn around as she bit my wrist, I felt a sharp shooting pain. I heard someone yell, “Watch out she fed!”

I couldn’t take my hand away. She removed her teeth and I saw her fangs and the eyes turned crimson. She dispatched the three quickly and looked at Cliff and just said something that I don’t remember.

Since then, I sold my small house, bought a brand new red suburban and gave away my pickup truck. I hold extravagant parties at my new mansion and every once in a while one of the guests doesn’t leave…
