Election day for us Aussies

Election day for us Aussies, and it's going to be close.  I still can't decide who to vote for, as I have little trust in either of the major parties.  Will probably vote for one of the smaller ones.

On a funny note, we have party running called The Australian Sex Party.  I've been joking all week that I'll vote for them, but would never really do it.  Sadly though, our young people who don't really know what they are doing will vote for them cos the of the name.

In Australia it is complusory to vote.  If you don't, you get fined.  So many people make 'donkey' votes, which is they sign in and then post blank ballot papers or write stuff on them.  I think that is really sad, as we are lucky to be in a country where we do have a say.  Even if we think the pollies don't listen, it's far better than the alternatives.

My son is voting for the first time, and he is quite excited about it.  It's like a rite of way.

Well, that's it, just a little about what is happening in Australia today.

Date: 8/21/2010 6:59:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    I don't care who knows whom I voted for I'm proud of whom I did...it is very close and all the tallies are still being counted and it could go either way, but I stand by my vote...
Date: 8/21/2010 11:30:00 AM  From Authorid: 28848    Wow such odd governmental operations in Australia. First off, it's Saturday. Most all government agencies are closed on Saturday and Sunday here in the US. Another thing that stands out, being forced to vote, hardly seems like a privilege when you're not given a choice. And last but not least, The Australian Sex Party? Tehe..I did giggle a bit at that one. I don't know what it takes in order to establish a party there, but here in the US there are lots of measures that you have to take in order to establish a party, and not many are able to qualify. And not to say that the US is right or superior in its policies and procedures by any means, just thought I would point out some interesting differences.
Date: 8/21/2010 6:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I know RM, I think it's a joke to have such a party named as the Australian Sex Party...Our elections are always held on a Saturday and the polling booths close at 6pm on that day..Once you turn 18 you are supposed to register for voting. Those who are not interested in voting for whom is to run the country, go to the polling booths, get their names crossed of the electoral roll, take their ballot papers and scribble msg's etc across them, fold them and place them in the ballot boxes...when it comes to counting those ballot papers they are counted as informal and not included in the tally count..there are always thousands of informal votes..but in saying that...those are the people who whinge and complain when the country is not run the way they would want it to. I'm all for voting myself, I like to have a say in whom I want to run my country, eventhough my candidate may not get in, I tried..
