Has Anyone Heard Much About the Lost Duchman Mine in Arizona? .. Ever Searching!

Supposedly there are riches hidden near the  Superstition Mountains in Arizona. This range of mountains is just east of Phoenix, Arizona and is a rough set of mountains where it is said that people sometimes go... but never be seen again.

I have been told a few stories that sound very mysterious. I have friends in Arizona and they seem pretty proud of this mystery surrounding the Lost Dutchman Mine. According to some accounts that have been some rumors but other stories have been recorded.

Some of the stories say that there exists a fantastic gold mine in those mountains like no other that has ever been seen. Since the mountains seem to be hard to navagate over the years, it has been the quest of many and an adventurer to some, while a place of doom to luckless others.

It is said that Apache Indians say that the “Thunder God” protect this mine... bringing death to those who attempt to pillage it. However, I’m not sure if that is more rumor, or if it has really been said by that tribe.

After hearing some of the stories, I decided to do some research on the subject and here is a bit of what I found.

Apparently the first man to discover the gold on the Superstition Mountain was Don Miguel Peralta. He was a member of a prominent family who owned a ranch near Sonora, Mexico. He discovered a vein of rich gold there around 1845, while he was searching for the treasure described to Coronado.

Shortly before he returned to Mexico for additional men and supplies with which to excavate the gold, he memorized the surrounding territory. He described the mountain’s most outstanding landmark as looking like a “sombrero”. That is why he nicknamed the mine the “Sombrero Mine”.

Other landmarks he committed to memory and described to others who would go back to the mine with him. He took many workers and lots of materials back to work the mine. Soon, he was shipping millions of pesos in pure gold back to Sonora. It was obvious that this was a gold strike like no other.

During this time period,  the Apache were angry over the Spanish presence on the mountain and in 1848, raised a large amount of  Indians to drive Peralta and his men from the area. Peralta knew he was no match for a small war, so he took his men and left the mine. Because he planned to return someday, Peralta took elaborate precautions to conceal the entrance to the mine and to wipe out any trace that they had ever worked there.

Unfortunately for Peralta, the next day as he prepared to move out.... but they never had a chance. Taken by surprise, the Apache warriors attacked and massacred the entire company of Spaniards. The pack mules were scattered in all directions, spilling the gold and taking it with them as they plunged over cliffs and into ravines.

For years and years after, prospectors and soldiers discovered the remains of the burros and the rotted leather packs that were still brimming with raw gold. The last case of anyone finding the bones of a Peralta mule was in 1914. A man named C.H. Silverlocke showed up in Phoenix one day with a few piece of badly decayed leather, some pieces of Spanish saddle silver and about $18,000 in gold concentrate.

There is another story about ‘The Dutchmen’ who saved Peralta from certain death in a knife fight and as a reward, he gave them a look at the map to the mine. I am still searching for information on this tale, to see if it is fable or real.

Has anyone here on USM heard about The Dutchman who got this map?

Thanks in advance.

I lived in Arizona for 18 years, but I don't really have much information on this subject. You have more info gathered here than I think I heard while living in Phoenix and Mesa. I'll check back on this post to see if anyone has info on the Dutchman part of the story. Good reading by the way !!!

Date: 7/1/2010 9:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 52489    Actually, I think the story of the Dutchman's mine is a conglomeration of several gold mine stories. The geology of the Superstition Mountains--where the mine was supposedly located--is not indicative of gold being in the area at all.
Date: 7/1/2010 4:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    Arion, there has been gold mined around lots of area's in Arizona. George and I even went up to a couple of streams in northern Arizona and panned for gold. We didn't get anything but sore backs .. LOL. But it was fun, and a way to get out of the heat of the desert.

Arion, you speak to the geology of those mountains. Does the presence of gold depend on how the layers of earth were formed, and whether there was volcanic pushing and pulling of the earth from beneath? Interesting subject !!!

Date: 7/2/2010 1:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 63366    Actually Arion there is a lot of small gold found all over that region.
Date: 7/2/2010 10:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    We went hiking in the Superstition mountains one year in February. It was already hot. I can't imagine what it must be like in the warm parts of the year.
Date: 7/2/2010 10:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    It's REALLY hot, Wildbob. And that really hot weather has killed at least one person out looking for this (the subject of this post) mirage.

God Bless..
