G20 Summit Riots, Did You Watch .. Ever Searching!

I must say that I accidentally watched some of the riots, mostly because I wanted to watch a program being broadcast on a Canadian TV station. My show was pre-empted with the news, and I sat there a bit spellbound by it all. I have to admit that I might be a bit off base, but I think of Canada as being a very peaceful country. I have been there a couple of times, and always found the people nicely laid back and not easily ruffled.

On TV, the video's kept circulating around a crowd of protesters at the global economic summit in Toronto last Saturday. It appeared that a small number of people were  torching police cruisers and smashing windows with baseball bats and hammers. They said on Sunday that Police arrested more than 150 people over the span of the summit. For much of the broadcast the camera's seemed to be showing a lot of fairly peaceful protesters.

Do you ever wonder how many of the irate and belligerent protesters were from other countries and giving Canada a bad name?

I believe I recall a summit in Seattle and other cities where similar uprisings happened with broken windows and such. I guess tempers are higher now than ever with the economy and all. I think it was a good thing that more people weren't hurt when issues take to the streets like they did in Toronto.

What are your feelings about situations like this one?

There is some suggestions that they are paid professional agitators that frequent these meetings and even if you agreed with their point of view, that does not condone the use of violent methods involved in these G20 meetings, what gives these people the right to trash private and public properties? it's wrong.

Date: 6/29/2010 9:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 63026    I am sure it was not all Canadians in the riots...There is always a group of protestors at these things and some do get violent.

Especially when the economy is bad all over the world, people are naturally going to be upset at the leaders of the countries.

Date: 6/29/2010 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 63846    As it was, the police overreacted. I came across an article on StumbleUpon about unfair police brutality - they were arresting anyone anywhere near the riots as well as the peaceful protesters and acting inhumanely toward the people, though most people were released without charges (though they were forced to stay in crowded cells and eat minimal food).

Date: 6/29/2010 10:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 63366    Tear gas and flash bangs should do the trick do this at enough G20's they will stay away or at least remain calm.
Date: 6/30/2010 9:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    What you didn't mention (maybe didn't know ) is that the cowardly, disgusting jerks that were protesting intentionally scouted out the area near the coroners. You see, they "happened" to ensure that they were right there when 2 of our soldiers were doing their final ride on the hiway of heroes, coming to the coroners. The police showed restraint and made sure that the two soldiers and their families who were there to say goodbye to their children were not inconvenienced by these cretins. Someone said it best, they are able to protest due to those two in the coffins. Disgusting really.
Date: 7/1/2010 12:51:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 2124    Thank you everyone for giving such great comments to my post. Paddy Bear, I wish you would give me some of your ideas. You seem quite bothered by the G20 riots. Zema, I have to agree with you. It does seem like a few criminal types steal the show. Probably exactly what they were trying to do. <-- Ditto what Aussie Girl said too. Magoo, that is even more upsetting than what they showed on TV. It is one thing to protest or draw a crowd to your agenda. But it is another thing altogether to cause such a dis-service to those greiving families. Sad really.
