The darkness in this place had just begun. I would not be caged again no matter the cost. Why cage who I am? What were they worth? They were now the hunted. Humanity would be nothing but a memory of blood, the warmth flowing through me. I was not part of them any more. They had nothing to offer me but succulent memories and an unquenchable thirst for their blood. The world still to still around us. No animal dared to move. Their heartbeats speeding up hoping that the warning signs in their bodies were wrong. I was now the biggest predator and they were all little morsels yet to be sampled. “Emily”. I looked but that voice did not belong here. Jace was silent on the matter looking at his hands. I knew he wanted to lick his fingers even if the blood was cold and lifeless. “Emily”. There it was again calling to me begging me to come to it. Just out of sight I could see someone. The whisper of my name had to have come from their lips. I moved as quick as I could but only breaking dawn lay there whispering among the trees. It was morning and it was already getting warm. The field lie ahead of us and then back to the darkness of the house.
Swatting at the tall grass made me feel like a child walking in the summer again. Behind me the golden dead grass made a road. It was my very own yellow brick road, well minus the bricks. I caught sight of his hands again. The blood looked even better with the breaking daylight catching it. I was feeling hungry then I ever had. The darkness in me was calling. If only this road came with a few munchkins of my owns. Their bright bold colors melting away into a golden red. Thick juicy red like cherries. I could almost smell their skin and feel it peel away like a ripe banana. I would push back on the top breaking them open. Peel back the skin where the blood lay. Greedily licking it up and taking in the succulent taste. The warmth cooling but filling my cold dead body with life. The monster let out. The yellow brick road when I was done would be nothing but ruby colored. I would gladly walk down that road splashing in the puddles. “Emily” The whisper had returned pulling me away from my beautiful thought. I scanned everywhere but there was nothing. The sun was so warm and the day had barely begun. I felt like I was the night of the cold desert and the sun was slowly burning me away.
“Look stop with the whispers. If you have something to say then say it!” I could not take it anymore. The anger in me was building and it wanted out. The darkness washed over me like a flood of endless night. There is where I would always live. It was easier to be in total darkness and shut out all light as no one and nothing can be discerned. There are no shadows to creep in, and take control. There we were all monsters hiding in the darkness waiting to strike. He said nothing as we moved back to the dust filled and almost forgotten home. Daylight was crashing through the boarded and ragged lace covered windows. The world was awakening to new light and all I wanted was the darkness to cover the world. There no one would see through my armor, they would see nothing but the blackness that pooled in my soul. The blackness that like thick ink with a few drops it soils everything. Anger and blackness was all I could trust. I would not let anyone hurt me. I would not let them through.
Walking through the door from the blinding edges of dawns light into the fragments made it feel more comfortable. The fragments of darkness held hope for me. The floor removing me from the ground seemed to take a part of me with it. I could feel the hollowness swallowing me whole. My eyes adjusted catching a glimpse of a dust covered painting. I walked in not caring for what Jace was doing. The eyes beneath the dust looked at me as though they could see my soul. I wiped my hand over it pulling layers of dust with the eyes holding me fast. Keeping me magnetically transfixed upon them. The striking red of her hat and the look in her eyes. She was hungry and yet she was like me unsatisfied. The pallid color of her cheeks reminded me of my own with the taste of his warm blood. The ventilating memories of him pulling me in. I closed my eyes letting it wash over me again. I could feel his body warmth pervading and intruding on my coldness. The brush of his lips over mine with the wave of heat from his breath meeting mine with coldness visible only by the air exchange. His hand reached for mine. The flames washed over me. Thump. Thump. The sound I longed for was here. I was not alone with Jace anymore. He had found me again.
