Self Sufficient Living

Hi guys!!! Happy Easter!!!

Since I was pretty young I've been interested in living self sufficiently - living in a green home, like a yurt, using solar, or wind power, collecting rain water for cooking, cleaning, etc., using composting toilets, raising a few animals, like goats, chickens, and pigs, growing my own food, and herbs and using bicycles or hpv's.

I've put so much thought into it, and my husband is quite interested in that lifestyle as well. I've done all kinds of research on the costs, but it seems like the start up costs would be totally out of our reach - especially now while my husband is out of work. I have heard that there are grants and loans for people that want to do this but I have no idea where to start, where to look or if I should even bother. I'm just curious if any of you might have ideas of where I should look, or if you are interested in the same kind of thing, and have any other ideas, period.

Thanks guys!!!! I hope your weekends are going well!

Date: 4/3/2010 7:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 5252    I've never really thought about it. I am so spolied on all of the ammenities that I have, so it'd take quite a while to get used to. I'm sure it costs quite a bit at first but in the long run it'd be worth the money and save you tons!! If it's something you are really interested in then you should go for it. I'm sure you could google how to get loans for it, everything is online, just a click away. Good luck! Happy Easter!!
Date: 4/4/2010 12:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 51876    I moved last year out to the country in East Texas. We don't live in a yurt but still live pretty green with a septic system, a water co-op that keeps costs down. It's farm country so lot's of fresh vegetables, fruit and meat. it is a hunters paradise.

It's all relative in how you want to go about "being green" there is no "official" way to do it.Just gotta go for it.

Date: 4/4/2010 6:11:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 64723    Here's a link about what yurts are: http://www.yurts.com/what/default.aspx

We've done what we can to go green - we grow some veggies, i recycle a lot of things to use in my crafts, and i make some of mine and my daughters clothing, but it's not enough. And we live in an apartment where we don't pay for our utilities so we dont exactly have a say in that area. If I can find loans or grants for living totally green, I WILL do it. And, knowing my daughter, I think she'd love it too!

Date: 4/6/2010 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 62579    We are starting to do this slowly but do plan to keep our electric and water. If you do not have all the money at once just slowly build on it and over time you will have what you need.
Date: 4/6/2010 2:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    We live in the country in a house that I built mostly with hand tools. I think that it's a wonderful goal to live a self sufficient lifestyle but I've never heard of any grants that will help you in your endeavor. Work hard, save some money and buy a piece of land in the country and you can make your vision a reality.
