School problems... AGAIN

A little while ago I posted about some issues we've been having with my daughter. Her school principal, her teachers, the guidance counselor and I sat down and talked one day and we all agreed she had some sensory issues.

Since then I've done tons of research on sensory processing issues and it seems to me that Adia is definitely, definitely having a hard time with them. Since the meeting things have been getting worse and worse. She's been injuring herself and the teachers don't realize it, because Adia just doesn't seem to feel much pain, or if she does she is unable to express it, even through crying. She's also absolutely terrified of loud noises... not just scared, I mean to the point where if a toilet flushes she starts shaking and pees her pants.

The teachers had my husband and I come in on Friday afternoon and told us they don't think Adia is ready to be in school, which I think is really a load of bull. Plus, we can't afford to take her out of school. I need to work, because even with my husband and I both working we are still over $1000 behind in rent.

Finally this afternoon after dropping Adia off at school I went to speak with her guidance counselor and she gave me the number to child development services. I guess basically what they will do is evaluate Adia and basically give us a diagnosis, and that will make it so that her teachers know that she can't be treated like everyone else (though I personally would LOVE for her to be treated like everyone else, thats just not possible) and maybe make it a little more comfortable and easier for her, so that we don't have to take her out of school. I also was told that even if she does have a sensory disorder it doesn't mean that she will have to be in special ed. That was something I was terrified of. That wouldn't be right for her, because she is a VERY smart, very articulate little girl. She just needs her teachers to be a tiny bit more understanding.

So, basically, if you can please think of Adia, and maybe pray that everything will go well with the development screening.

Thank you!

Date: 10/26/2009 1:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    You are on the right path B. Once you have the developmental screening, they should be able to set up some therapy appointments for her. I hope everything works out for you and Adia.
Date: 10/26/2009 3:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 12806    My son has a mild case of cerebral palsy as well as other things that make him "exceptional". The school is required to make special arrangements to accomodate children with special needs. My son has had physical and occupational therapy that are provided by the school, and other modifications to his classroom environment. He has even had vision therapy which I paid for. It was very expensive, and I thought it was crazy at first, but it helped him tremendously........ Bottom line is, there is help available, but sometimes you have to ask for it.

I hope everything works out for you and Adia.
God Bless,
