I have had similar knocking happen here at our house many times. The knock is quite loud at times and firm and it does sound like it is moving around. For us the answer was simple.. It was a bird, a big bird, not a normal wood pecker but another kind. See the type we had. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&um=1&sa=1&q=flicker There are many kinds of birds that will peck on your house, some on the metal flashing (if you have that). The flicker pecks a few times really hard then sits and watches what comes out if anything.. then eats it then does it again and again until nothing comes out then it moves to a different location and starts again. If it hears anything in the house it might fly away (the are shy) or they wait until the sound goes away and then starts back up again.. That what it sounds like happened to you, just a thought.. Thanks for sharing that story.. -Rad. |

Date: 10/5/2009 11:53:00 AM From Authorid: 28848 Could it have been the plumbing? a furnace? maybe mice? I think I would have tried to figure out what was causing it. |
Date: 10/5/2009 1:08:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228 Well, it was something most definitely knocking on the door, or it seemed that way. It only happened that one night. |
Date: 10/5/2009 1:10:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228 ReleaseMe, I checked the entire house from top to bottom. So I did try to find out what it was. I also had someone come in at one point to check to see if there were mice in the walls because of all the scratching noise, but they didn't find anything. |
Date: 10/5/2009 1:18:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228 I wish I could explain it better, it was most definitely knocking on the door, not in the walls, except for the time it went to the wall next to my daughters crib, which was an outside wall anyway and I don't think there was plumping in that wall??...if it had been in the walls I think I could have explained it away to myself, the same way I did with the scratching noise! |

Ya right a tree shrub, like the SHADOW a big black one that jumped off my roof, that I tried to say, oh it was just the tree outside, the wind has to be blowing. KNOWING full in my mind we had no such tree and the wind was not blowing and when two friends of mine came the next day,*as I seen headlights just as the shadow came flying off the roof* and they asked me, what was that shadow that jumped off your roof. It was their head lights I'd seen as they were home and felt they had to check on me for some reason. So I really did see it. My grandma use to say that if you heard knocking three times that someone close to you was going to die. I hated that. |
Date: 10/5/2009 3:15:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228 LOL Firstborn, yeah, it's easier to explain some things away if it's possible. Who wants to be terrified all the time?? This same house we would hear crashing noises that came from (seemingly) thin air. The noise sounded as though an entire cabinet full of dishes had fallen, but you could never pin point exactly where the noise came from. My husband and I both heard that at the same time when I first moved in and my sister heard it as well. |

Date: 10/5/2009 8:57:00 PM From Authorid: 42945 I've had birds doing that in the ceiling or what sounded like it was coming from the ceiling...we have possums jumping from the trees onto the house, but eventhough I now that they are birds or possums, I still get scared when awoken from a deep sleep hearing the noises... |
Date: 10/9/2009 7:21:00 AM From Authorid: 24673 This sounds like what happened in a farmhouse in NJ--the three knocks, the pounding and the crashing. It was one scary place and many people believe that the lady who lived there, we called her "Mom", died of freight because of this. When noises can't be explained, they can be terrifying. |

Date: 11/20/2009 9:41:00 AM From Authorid: 62956 Do you have a dog in the house? Sometimes when they scratch themselves and are laying against a wall, it can scare the total senses out of you especially if you aren't expecting it. Aside from that, not sure what else it could be. I live in an old house where squirrels and rats get into the attic and they sound like they are wrestling up there. Is it always just three knocks in succession? |
Date: 11/20/2009 2:38:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15228 yeah, it was 3 knocks, almost to the point of pounding. We had a small dog at the time, but he was sleeping with my daughter. |
