It was a dark and dreary night. The winds were howling and the rain came down relentlessly. Within the confines of my cozy livingroom I sat before my computer happily pecking away at my keyboard compeltely oblivious to the chaos outside. The cat was asleep in his favourite chair, a small lamp gave off a candlelit ambience to the room, the fire popping away in the fireplace... *very loud noise of a needle scratching across a record, and a car slamming it brakes* fireplace? Did I say fire in a fireplace? Popping? Just to be sure I turned and looked...nope no fireplace. Right so what was that popping? A crackling, snapping type of popping. My ears perked I scan the room looking for anything out of place. Nothing. I turn my gaze upon the cat...no, no strange noises from him today. Hmmm. There it goes again! Two or three pops, a pause and then a few more. What on earth is that? It seems to be coming from my desk. There is only one small drawer so I open it and inspect...POP...POP POP. It definitely isn't coming from the drawer. POP POP...POP POP POP. My hair rises on my neck as I begin to think I shouldn't have been watching those episodes of A Haunting earlier. POP POP POP Now I am alarmed! My imagination getting the better of me I rush to the light switch and turn on the main overhead light. Again I hear the popping noises but this time accompanied by what sounds like something small dropping on the floor. At this point all my senses are heightened and my heart is now pounding to free itself from my chest. Pure panic sets in as I observe a small indian rubber ball silently roll across my livingroom floor. I am now petrified, frozen stiff to the spot upon which I stand. Puss Puss quietly rises from the chair, stretches and jumps down to inspect the ball. With his left paw he gently nudges it before loosing interest and proceeding to clean himself. POP...POP POP Now Puss Puss stops in mid lick and turns his head toward the noise. POP POP Now he is crouching down, motionless, the tip of his tail gently twitching in its attempt to attract whatever is making this noise. POP POP He shifts on his front legs as he prepares to launch himself. Is it a mouse? In Scotland? LOL No! Silly me. Now I'm grasping at straws. With very shaky legs I manage a few steps, just enough to see in the direction in which he is looking. Just the desk and a small three tiered victorian cake stand with a picture, a couple of ceramic cats and some pine cones and legos on the bottom tier. POP POP...POP POP POP Puss Puss launches himself at the cake stand and quite suddenly, as it happens, the stand topples and everything upon it tumbles across my floor as Puss Puss takes a turn and scampers away to the window sill. POP POP POP Movement! The pine cones! Those bloody pine cones are popping! With great relief I let out a huge sigh remembering how Calum had brought them home not so long ago from Grans house. He had placed them there on the cakestand and eventually one of his rubber balls and a few legos joined them. The change in weather must have set them in motion and they were popping open, probably knocked the ball off quite easily...and frightening the ever living bejesus out of me! LMBO at myself now I begin picking up the mess. Perhaps I will leave them on the stand for the next unsuspecting person to be sitting here later this evening...the hubby! I just love a kodak moment, don't you? How it changed my life:No major life changes...just felt a bit foolish in the end LOL You can join Unsolved Mysteries and post your own mysteries or interesting stories for the world to read and respond to Click hereScroll all the way down to read replies.Show all stories by Author: 26363 ( Click here )
