What Has Happened to Spelling? @}~~

I know this may sound dumb, but what happened to spelling? Lately I have been reading posts and find by the time I figured out what the words were I forgot what the post was about.

Is it just me? Am I that old that I feel spelling should be an important part of our life?

I know with the age of cell phones, computers and texting that people don't write out the whole word but come on at least when you do write the whole word try to write it correctly.

OK, now you can correct me because I most likely spelled something wrong..LOL

Date: 8/25/2009 9:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 64723    I agree! Bad spelling is kind of frustrating. I have to admit I'm occasionally lazy when it comes to capitalization, but... whooole different ballgame. Spelling is very important. ~Blacksunshine
Date: 8/25/2009 9:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 63201    Storm Chaser you can't imagine how strongly I feel about this. I'm totally with you. When I text, I spell my words out but I have a QWERTY keyboard on my phone so it makes it easier. When I had a regular cell phone, I abbreviated. When I am typing something online for the public to see, I check my spelling. I was state UIL spelling champion for SIX years running, ever since I was old enough to compete. I realize typos happen, but just not making the effort to punctuate, spell, and use proper grammar really irritates me.

And my number one spelling pet peeve? "Inconvenience"...such as when stores are under construction, out of a product or whatever, they will write it "sorry for inconvience" every time. I've been known to take a marker out of my purse and change the sign LOL

Good post!

Date: 8/25/2009 9:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 22433    bad spelling is a big pet peeve of mine. grammar I don't really care about...we're not all english majors..I don't know when it's who or whom...I just learned recently when to say "her and I" and when it's "me and her"...but when you have to desypher an entire post because it's, "i no..me 2..wut do u thnk bout it?", it drives me CRAZY.
Date: 8/25/2009 9:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 22433    oh..the biggest thing that bugs me is when people don't use question marks. 'hey how are you. what are you doing today'....this BUGS the HECK out of me more than anything!!
Date: 8/25/2009 10:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 64514    ugh!!! I know what you mean, it used to drive me nuts, especially the 'ghetto talk', it takes me forever to understand what they're saying and I'm only 28, I should understand this new talk LoL
Date: 8/25/2009 10:24:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ You all make me laugh. Having worked in a school I was shocked recently when I was checking the "state tests" and noticed spelling was not graded. It is no wonder children today can't spell, the state does not require it. I remember when my boys were in school study time for spelling seemed to take forever, now if you ask a child "How long do you study for spelling?" they look at you as if you are crazy.
Date: 8/25/2009 10:25:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ Oh and yesterday my sisters friend wrote something on her facebook wall and I had to call someone to tell me what it said.
Date: 8/25/2009 10:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 63366    I blame it all on the short hand texters. U No Wat I s'ing. Down with texting!!! After all you have the darn phone in your hand and the numbers already preset or ID'ed. Why wear out your buttons and risk a thumb sprain?
Date: 8/25/2009 11:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 3835    I absolutely agree with you.
Date: 8/25/2009 11:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 25390    LOL, I made a post like this back in my college days....so it's not just you and your "age!" I've been known as the human spellcheck. I'm not kidding...I have friends actually call me in the middle of the day and say, "how do you spell......"

I'm pretty picky about my spelling...if I make a typo it drives me crazy!!

Date: 8/25/2009 12:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ LOL, it DID give me a headache. Aleve to the rescue!
Date: 8/25/2009 12:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 7710    I know what you mean- I'm so sick of bad spelling!
Date: 8/25/2009 12:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 62722    My brother-in-law is a retired school teacher and his spelling is just bad, and yes, grammer should be important, one can be seen as an idiot by the way they compose and write, even a simple post, this is America and our first and primary language is English, anything else is alien, so be proud of your language, learn to use it properly, there is nothing more beautiful.
Date: 8/25/2009 1:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 43015    I hate it when people type like that on the internet! I admit I do type like "u, r, idk" etc when I'm texting just because it's faster and easier but there's no need for on here!
Date: 8/25/2009 1:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 13636    I'm a firm believer George encourages bad spelling on this site so that he can feel better about his horrid spelling.
Date: 8/25/2009 1:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ Slaps head.. never mind.. "idk" I Don't Know.. duh
Date: 8/25/2009 1:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ Blue Butterfly... what is "idk"?
Date: 8/25/2009 5:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    When people misspell "definitely" it definitely drives me crazy.
Date: 8/25/2009 5:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I agree with you hun..although I heard on TV last night over here in Australia, and it came from very well educated men, that far too much emphasis is placed on spelling. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, but yes, as long as it looks similar to the actual word it should be sufficient is what they were saying.
Date: 8/25/2009 5:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    I never mind the mispellings because not everyone is a great speller, so I just overlook it. Sometimes when I'm typing too fast and my fingers are flying I make errors, too. LOL! And, some are real doozies.
Date: 8/25/2009 6:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 5301    ...you mean I went through all that hell in school learing to spell and now it has been found to be unimportant?

All rihgt tehn.

Date: 8/25/2009 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    baby...all of your mispelled words are deliberate
Date: 8/25/2009 6:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 5301    ...I need practice sweetie. Bare with me. I wile gets worst.
Date: 8/25/2009 6:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 64723    I think what bothers me the most is when people type teh instead of the. At first I thought it was just a mistake, but then I realized... I guess... it's the thing to do??? Drives me nuts. ~Blacksunshine
Date: 8/25/2009 8:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 30747    You are so right but it also extends to speech. Have you heard how some young people are talking these days??
Date: 8/26/2009 5:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 52746    Radman, that was hard to read and I appreciated Chaser's translation! I used sms speak for the phone but I don't use it for longer writings. I find it incredibly hard to read on a post, for instance. As for spelling, well, I understand we can all get the odd thing mixed up, letters transposed, homophones, etc but as long as the majority of the message is fine, I can see what people are intending to convey. I think if text speak dominates a lengthy message it's down to laziness or it is littered in errors, then there's a problem somewhere.
Date: 8/26/2009 5:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 12709    I completely agree with you. Spelling and grammar are VERY important.
Date: 8/26/2009 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    I've struggled with spelling all my life. I'm just not good at it. I love spell checker and it's made quite an improvement in the readability of my writing. Without it, I type too fast then don't see my mistakes.

Bad Spellers Of the World Untie!

Date: 8/26/2009 10:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 14314    LOL, I know how you feel. Once, I was in a forum, reading comments, everything was ok, until I found a comment, were the poster abbreviated (sp?) everything, like some people do when sending a text message. It took me a while to understand what it said.
Date: 8/27/2009 6:22:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22852    @}~~ LOL, Cissy, that is what I mean. people missplelling words is normal, I am talking about what Radman's reply, that is the kind of spelling I meant..LOL
