Thinspirations... -LittleJung

I wanted to workout so I googled some celebrity workouts when I came across a website that had several pictures of Hayden Panettierre eating a cupcake. I decided to read what the owner of this site wrote beneath the pictures. I was appalled to see that whoever this person was, was bashing Panettierre for eating a cupcake. Not only that, she said she had "mommy arms" and "thunder thighs" and should not be eating a cupcake because they made her fat. I was disgusted by this, because if you've ever seen Panettierre you know she is rather skinny. I continued to look at the rest of this persons site and came across a page called "Thinspirations" that had tips on helping people stay and become thin like "That grumble in your stomach isn't hunger, it's applause" and "When you get hungry, do something gross like clean the litter box so you don't eat"

I decided to google thinspirations to see if there was anything else like this, and there are pages after pages of "tips" on how to become skinny, and stay skinny. Almost all of them have disclaimers saying that the websites are not to promote anorexia. But if you're giving tips like "If you get hungry, cut one apple into 8 pieces so you can have 2 for breakfast, 2 for lunch, 2 for dinner and 2 for a snack so your body thinks it's being fed" and telling girls to "Put pictures up of super skinny models around your house so you know what you want to be when you get hungry and stop yourself from eating" don't you think you're promoting anorexia and eating disorders? Not to mention, I came across blog after blog of young girls calling themselves fat because they couldn't see there ribs and putting pictures up of near anorexic models saying things like "God I wish my legs were that skinny" and so on. It really disgusted me...

It's a known fact that the media puts out images of super skinny models and makes it out to be the norm, so naturally, teenagers and just women in general (boys too, I guess) want to be that way so they can feel beautiful, but I am sick of it.

I've struggled with my body image for years, and was even overweight at one point. I reached a point where I was content with my body image because I was constantly doing three hour practices, games, and various other activities through cheerleading in my high school, and I was in the best shape that I have ever been in. Since cheerleading has ended a couple months ago, I have put on about 5 pounds. I am no where near fat, but I have been feeling a little dumpy about myself because I notice that I have a little bit more of a tummy than I had before, and my body image hasn't been the greatest. Especially since I am going into my freshman year of college, and I am deathly afraid of gaining the "Freshman 15". I have been thinking about losing weight, and to be honest, the ways I've come up with haven't been the greatest.

Seeing these websites of "Thinspirations" and "Pro-Ana" (Pro Anorexia) have completely changed my mind. The best way I can put it, is the words of Morrie from Mitch Albom's book Tuesdays With Morrie...

"The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it"

Well, this is me not buying it anymore. I am deciding right now to no longer stand in the mirror and bash my body. I am deciding to no longer weigh myself everytime I can so that I know that I have lost weight, or if I should eat less. My goal is no longer to be skinny, hoping to look like an actress on a movie, or a Hollywood starlet. I want to be healthy, and I want to be happy.

Workouts are supposed to be fun. I'm young, I should be able to eat what I want and not feel bad about it. Of course, everything in moderation and a balanced diet is important, but weight isn't everything!

Date: 7/30/2009 11:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I agree with you Ash. If you eat healthy, do some exercise and feel good, that's good enough...People forget that what is in our genes will have a lot to do with how our shapes are going to be...
Date: 7/30/2009 11:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 64752    It's so hard being a female DX Gawd DX You keep up that attitude girl! This is life, not Hollywood. A couple years ago I lost over 100 pounds and I can honestly say I'm not proud of the way I did it u___u I'm happy the weight is gone, but I'm struggling to keep it off because of the way I messed up my body in the process :\

That 'thinspirations' is disgusting... It's okay for someone to want to lose weight, but it should be for health reasons, not for "I WANT TO BE SKINNY D:" reasons... Besides... I'm a firm believer that women need curves lol I'm far from fat, but I got curves and I ain't starving myself to lose them

I could ramble forever about this. Things like that really peave me off. You keep up your attitude, it's INSPIRATIONAL DAHLING, INSPIRATIONAL.

Date: 7/31/2009 1:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 31765    I wish I'd had as much sense as you at your age...or even at my age now Good for you Ash. You know who you are and not what the media is trying to make you think you should be. Awesome self respect you're showing and I love your attitude about yourself. Rock on, lady.
Date: 7/31/2009 5:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 13546    Good on you sweetie!! You are so right. YOU should be able to enjoy all aspects of your life, including what you look like. You are a beautiful young lady, and you know what you want, which is awesome!

Life is not about being the skinniest person, Life is about shaping your own person.

Proud of you hon!

Date: 7/31/2009 5:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 64514    Its a VERY SAD WORLD we live in where being skin & bones is beautiful instead of sickly and being of normal weight is too fat. that site is just tips for anorexia, don't let it fool you.
Date: 7/31/2009 5:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 64514    P.S. if you want to lose weight, try playing PS2 or PS3 Dance Dance game with some one, its a fun way to get exersice, trying to keep up and beat each others score.
Date: 7/31/2009 5:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    This is disgusting!!! My 11 year old has been concerned about her weight for a few years! She has snotty friends who are half her size and who make comments about how little and skinny they are. My daughter is tall and slim and healthy looking...last doctors appointment I asked the nurse to reasure her that her weight is healthy (she is about 4'7 and weighs about 80 pounds).
Date: 7/31/2009 7:03:00 AM  ( Admin-JGB )   It never ceases to amaze me, how mature you really are, and the natural way you come by critical thinking! I'm so excited for your future!! And while it is difficult to be happy with self image because of the external forces in this culture, I'm in total agreement with you about how "fit" should be where its at and not looks, because as Zema said, we all have our genes to deal with!!
Date: 7/31/2009 9:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 62993    Don't worry about your body size too much. Just focus on eating healthy and staying active. Glad you see the light.
Date: 7/31/2009 10:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 43991    It is SO good that you have that attitude.. but I hope you understand that eating disorders are mental problems. People who look at these websites and create them do so because they are sick, and when I say sick I mean they are ill.

I feel the need to stand up for these ladies and men because well.. I was one of them for many years. I remember the pictures I kept in my book and room that were my thinspiration. Now, I wasn't one to bash others to make me feel better. I liked to look at extremely thin people. It made me feel better when I starved myself.

Now, I realize how messed up I was. It really upsets me when I realize all of the unhealthy things I was doing. On the bright side, I have learned how to loose weight the healthy way.

Normally.. this isn't something I talk about. It's not something I like to think about. But most of these people on pro-ana sites.. please try to think of how they feel. They are so miserable and lost that they feel the ONLY thing they can control is their weight. Oh, it's such a horrid feeling. Instead of bashing these people (although they bash others... let's be better then they are!) maybe we could pray, or chant, or just think kind words for them.. because trust me, they need it.

Sorry this comment is so long winded. This post just really had the tears flowing and I had so much to say.

Once again I'd like to let you know I think it's WONDERFUL that you have such a positive attitude about your body and the road to being healthy! If only these girls could get their inspirations from you.

Date: 7/31/2009 12:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    sites like these make me very sad, the example it sets for young girls is horrible!, along with these celeb sites bashing celebs which many can be seen as role models for being "fat" when they are very thin
Date: 7/31/2009 2:33:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23101    Thank you Wendy, Zema and Imma Ghost

Lady Phoenix you are so sweet, thank you so much! Rissa, thank you! I really appreciate it

Lady Darkness, it is really sad to see the pressures that society puts on people, girls especially! And I will keep that in mind! I have a Wii, so maybe I'll find something for that.

Kelly, I wish your daughter good luck with her body image. She sounds like a tiny thing, but I know how hard it is to believe what you're body actually is!

Thank you Mommy!

Thank you Sofia, I'm trying to do that!

I agree with you Midnightly! Thank you for your comment

Date: 7/31/2009 2:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 63366    Ask your Doctor what is the healthy range you should be in for your size and age and if you are over that go for a 3 mile walk everyday (weather permitting) till you get to the medical goal. If you start now you won't have heart and other problems when you get old like me. LOL
Date: 7/31/2009 2:41:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23101    Katetastic, I am sorry you've had struggles with disorders with your body image! I'm not trying to bash these people, and I do realize that it is an illness. What I'm trying to say is that I don't like the fact that these websites are encouraging others to engage in this anorexic/starvation behavior. I don't think it's right to promote this behavior, although I do realize that some people are severely ill and can't see how bad it really is. I wish there was someway I could help them. Mostly, what I'm trying to say is that I disagree with the way society promotes the way women and people should look, act, think, talk and dress. It's really disturbing.

Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate your point of view!

Date: 7/31/2009 2:43:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23101    Disinformer, I'm going in for a doctor appointment for something else soon, but I plan on talking to her about it! I'm pretty sure I'm not too far away from my healthy weight though! But yes, my goals are to be healthy now to help me both now & in my future!
Date: 7/31/2009 6:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 64747    I wish you luck LJ, its great knowning that you are happy with the way you are... no matter what body shape you are be it round our thin your still beautiful!
Im sick of open magz and seeing a picture of Britney or Paris or whoever after ganing a few pounds and the title to the page would be ''Celebs gone Fat!! When its obv that there not and if the truth be known most of them need to put on a few pounds!

That 'thinspirations' thing is revolting!
Anyway before i start raving good luck again LJ! ~Louise

Date: 7/31/2009 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Ashley, you have a great head on your shoulders, hun

I definitely agree. I am overweight myself, but I am ok with myself for the most part. I earned my weight, with my son. LOL xD

I get the "fat chick look" sometimes from people, but it doesn't bother me as much now as it used to. I just remind myself, that they don't have to live with me, or my body, and I have nothing to prove myself to them.

Society is tough on us, whether we're overweight or super skinny- it goes both ways. I say just find a way to be happy with yourself. If you feel you are too big/too small, then do things healthy and try to fix it- hoever, don't fixate on it, you're more than your weight.

I think you're a beautiful girl, and the last pic I saw of you, I wouldn't even think you'd need to lose those 5 lbs. But, if you want to sweety, We're behind ya 100% and you'll succeed at it too.

Good luck with your first year of college sweetheart!

*huge hugs*

Date: 7/31/2009 8:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 28190    Oh, and I completely forgot- I think the websites you found are very saddening. I also agree with you about Hayden Pantierre, she's beautiful and not a bit overweight. I hope that every girl that is struggling with this issue, can find some peace. I heard awhile back that the "average" woman is a size 12-14. Celebs- models, actresses, famous people, singers; most don't look like even 'normal' people, why people automatically put that as the "beautiful people" is beyond me. Being beautiful on the outside, is only skin deep; what really matters is what's inside.

*hugs*

Date: 7/31/2009 8:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23101    Amanda, I completely agree with you! I think everyone deserves to be happy with themselves and how they look, because there's so much more to life than weight. Society does not help any of us in doing that though! Those websites were really disturbing and I was SO surprised to see them! Thank you so much Mandaness, I appreciate it!
Date: 7/31/2009 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 31048    I have seen these websites too, and they ARE disgusting. They're basically made by and for people who hate themselves. Most young girls are really impressionable and don't need to stumble onto those sites and fall victim to something like that. Oh, and about the freshmen 15--some people gain weight their first year of college because of changing metabolisms as you get older and whatnot, but I think the main cause of the weight gain is the fact that most college students are broke and eat cheap fattening foods, order pizza with roommates all the time or go out too often with their new friends to eat fast food...combined with a steady intake of beer and lots of time laying around studying instead of exercising...I actually was in the best shape of my life the first year of college because my roommates were runners and I would go running with them. So I think whether or not you gain weight is really up to you! After 2 pregnancies I've finally reached a point where I couldn't care less about my weight. lol. I can't remember the last time I weighed myself or obsessed about the size of my clothes. I think my body's beautiful It's a really good feeling.
Date: 7/31/2009 8:45:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23101    Good to know Blondie! I don't know if my roomies workout a lot or not yet, but I found out taht in the studen recreation complex they offer exercise classes for $20 extra, as well as a full service gym that is paid for through tuition, so I'm hoping to get a good use out of both of those to help with not gaining the Freshman 15!

That's really good to hear that you're content with your body! Not a lot of people can say that
