Date: 6/27/2009 7:06:00 PM From Authorid: 13546 We never have shut down major appliances during a storm. Now I may think twice about it! We haven't had anything happen as of yet.. *knock on wood* |
Date: 6/27/2009 7:06:00 PM From Authorid: 11176 We turn off the computer and modem but nothing else. Also we don't take showers or wash dishes during the storms either just something my mom wouldn't let us do |
Date: 6/27/2009 7:07:00 PM From Authorid: 64365 nope...I just keep on goin' |
Date: 6/27/2009 7:16:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18928 We don't use the dishwasher or shower during storms unless it is very necessary. |

Nah. I don't give a thought about it. I got a laptop, and we got surge protectors... We had a storm last two nights ago at 2 in the morning...I should of got up and watched it. I do love a good storm |
Date: 6/27/2009 7:23:00 PM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 18928 The power surge didn't help us either time |

...I don't know if I'm just lucky in this respect but I'm rarely on the computer during a storm and have never had a problem with any other electrical gizmos. I think the power supply for my boys' Gamecube may have been fried this way. The case was melted up a bit. |
Date: 6/27/2009 7:29:00 PM From Authorid: 64162 Yeah, we turn ours off during bad storms. Not necessarily because of lightning, but because when it just cuts off like that, it takes a million years to come back up, haha. We're impatient people. =P. But it is a good idea to turn it off just to be safe. |
Date: 6/27/2009 7:40:00 PM From Authorid: 26303 Yep, puter is the first thing to go off. |
Date: 6/27/2009 8:08:00 PM From Authorid: 21903 Back when my battery had more than a 20 minute life, I'd just unplug. Now I basically flip a coin in my head but often I do not. Bad idea... |
Date: 6/27/2009 8:50:00 PM From Authorid: 37150 Yes actually I do. Thunder and lightning freak me out and I refuse to attract lighning to me.lol. I don't know how that works w/ cell phones, but that's what my gameboy is for. |
Date: 6/27/2009 9:01:00 PM From Authorid: 30621 No. But recall my mother use to unplug everything. And once knew a lady who always covered her mirrors during storms as well as a death. |
Date: 6/27/2009 9:32:00 PM From Authorid: 62833 I dont, but I work from home and god forbid a storm comes rolling through, they consider it a non-valid excuse to log out of work!! So, I have worked through many a storm! However a recent power surge did fry my hard drive and I lost a lot of treasured photos. |
Date: 6/27/2009 10:55:00 PM From Authorid: 35720 Nope, I usually sit on the computer through storms myself.. lol. |

Date: 6/28/2009 9:49:00 AM From Authorid: 46486 Yes I do, it happened to my friends computer it got fried while they were still online. I always was taught to shut the computer down. Even if you have a cable modem, better be safe than sorry. |

I unplug the computers and diconnect the modem as well...the lightning surge can travel through the telephone or cable modems if they are directly connected to the devices. I do the same with my flat screen TV's. |
Date: 6/28/2009 8:41:00 PM From Authorid: 53961 Yes |
Date: 6/29/2009 5:54:00 AM From Authorid: 42945 I don't usually but after reading some of these comments maybe I should |
Date: 6/29/2009 6:28:00 AM From Authorid: 51292 I have a "thing" with lightning Ive almost been stuck twice, I mean its been within a few feet of me. So I stay inside and turn all my appliances off during storms, because I think the lightning is out to get me or something LoL. Lightning hits bad here it struck my computer three times in one month, back when I had dial up on my old computer I just kept having to buy new modems. You would think I would have learned my lesson with my old computer but no I didnt. The last time our stuff got hit it was coming a really bad lightning storm and I thought Id run outside in the car port and try to catch my baby kitten before it got drowned in the storm. Almost as soon as I stepped outside I heard a boom behind me like dynamite or something it scared me so bad I fell down the stairs. I managed to look behind me and I saw it had hit the tree a few feet away in my yard sparks and fire were flying everywhere. I was so lucky it didnt get me, because I was honestly barefoot standing in water at the time. But when I got inside it was bad, it got my new computer, my brothers new computer, my brothers x box 360, my hair straightner and I guess the surge was so strong it busted the actual phone box into bits. I had to buy all new stuff, dell came out and installed a new mother board for my brother the phone company had to install all new phone equipment. My phone jack in my room still wont work to this day, its been hit way to much I guess. But yeah I even had to buy all new ethernet and usb/phone cords and routers etc as well because it fried EVERYTHING. That last hit costed way too much, so needless to say we are much more careful these days. I think it pays to be that way better safe than sorry. |
Date: 6/29/2009 7:37:00 AM From Authorid: 10722 I don't, there's no need. |

Date: 7/1/2009 4:40:00 AM From Authorid: 26363 Well considering we don't have electrical storms here in Scotland then I don't bother but when I'm living in Florida then ABSOLUTELY! |
Date: 6/10/2014 8:46:00 PM From Authorid: 18929 yes I do not. |
