It's most likely a a fox....we lived in the country for almost 12 yrs before we ever heard a fox in the woods, and the first time I ever heard it I ran like something was gonna get me....it *really* does sound like a woman screaming!  |

It probably was a couple of cats... Last summer, I was at a friend's house, and 3 of us were sitting on the deck having a drink, when we heard what sounded like someone screaming "STEVE!!!!" Just so happened that my friend's name is Steve. His wife had gone to bed. He ran inside thinking something had happened to her. She was sound asleep. Then I ran to the neighbors house, thinking it might have come from that direction. All 3 of us heard the same thing and would swear it was someone screaming his name. When we came back out, it was obviously cats fighting, or doing whatever cats do in the woods late at night, but you couldn't have convinced us of that when we first heard it.  |

ya...when cats are fighting or in heat they scream and sound NOTHING like cats normally sound and can sound exactly like a woman screaming. it can sound horrible.  |

Well, I would agree with the cat possibility but the only time I have ever heard a cat make a sound like a woman screaming was a mountain lion in the New Mexico mountains.A couple of cats in heat still sound like cats but the mountain lion really did sound like a evil female shriek. Hope it doesn't keep you up at night.  |

Well, I guess it could have been cats, but I've heard cats screaming/fighting and they did not sound like this. I lived in the mountains of North Carolina for 8 yrs. and never heard anything that sounded this awful.  |

I have heard female Bobcats (which were in heat) and they almost sound like a women screaming... This is most likely what it is.  |

Ranger, I HOPE it was a Bobcat. Every now and then, we do find big claw marks on some of our trees in the yard. I researched different animal sounds online, but it didn't sound like any of them. I'll see if I can find some Bobcat sounds. Some one told me it may have been a raccoon. Do they scream like banshees too? |

My guess would be a big cat like a mountain lion. We were rafting down a remote river one time and we heard a mountain lion attack and kill some smaller animal. You've never heard such an awful commotion. In the wildlife shows, even if they show a cat attack, they don't play the sound. It sends shivers down your spine.  |

After nearly 3 hours of listening to various animal screams, I believe Nani has it right. I think it was a fox screaming. That came the closest to what I heard. I did not know they could scream like that, or that loud. I went to youtube and found it by typing in "fox scream." Thanks to all of you for the info and replies. If I hear it again, (which I hope I don't!) I'll try to remember to grab my phone and record it. It was absolutely one of the scariest sounds I've ever heard. |

Bob Cats sound like a woman screaming, I have heard them as well but we live in Central Florida and they are common here, I don't know if they are as far north as PA. Just stay in doors when you hear that sound again. They can be dangerous.  |

Whether it's something paranormal or kitties, foxes, fisher cats, or whatever (the animals more likely) if I heard anything like what you guys are talking about I'd probably lock every door to the outside and window in the house, draw the blinds and cover everything that you can see outside through, go to the opposite side of the house from where the noise is coming from, and try not move more than 5 feet in any direction! LMBO!!!!! I'm easily set off by sounds so yeah, that would probably just work me up more than you'd believe! I'm a big wussy, what can I say? LOL  |
