I live in a tiny farming village off the beaten path, far from the busy city and big autobahns. Here life is simple and unlike any place I have ever lived. The ringing of the church bell begins and ends the day, just as it has for hundreds of years. The houses have changed little since medieval times. The whole place has a fairy tale look to it. The folk who live here carry on with daily life just as they have for centuries. At dusk each day the ringing begins as darkness descends upon the village. One can hear the echo of shutters closing, perhaps to keep the spirits of darkness at bay
Tonight the village was extremely quite and as most nights we sat around the table having coffee, when we heard a loud sound, which made us all jump in our seats. Again and again the noise resounded though the house. I must have left one of the door open downstairs. I searched the whole house and found nothing open. I looked outside and no wind, nothing . I was starting to get a scary feeling as I approached the down stairs kitchen. I could hear the distinct sound of someone crying, as I opened the door, the kitchen floor seemed to be covered in a mist... the whole room was glowing as light reflected through ice , the air was icy cold. I could smell something sickening sweet. In an instant the door was ripped from my hand! slamming over and over... five or six times! For the first time I was scared out of my wits. I wanted to run.. but my legs were to weak. This was no vision from the past, it was real and happening in real time. I could feel something evil lurking in the darkness and by some chance of fate, it wanted all of us...
I was in a total state of fear and disbelief... the door opened and there stood my daughter “Dad! She exclaimed; What in the world is going on down here”? I could not speak, as I look around the kitchen everything was normal again. “Are you ok dad, your white as a sheet”? Finally I was able to say; “Did you hear that”? She said, Dad the whole village heard you screaming, we thought someone was killing you”. Screaming ! I snapped back, I wasn’t screaming. The door was slamming by itself! I was too afraid to scream, and this crying, on and on I went. She got me by the arm, “Come on dad, lets go upstairs... you need to chill out ”.
Later regaining my composer and I began to describe my encounter to opened mouths, They just stared at me for what seemed like an eternity. My daughter started; “Dad, we heard the door slamming and horrible screams, we thought you were playing a joke on us. She went on... then we got this weird cold feeling. We were scared to death and didn’t know what was going.” We thought someone or something was killing you. I explained over and over I never screamed as I was too frightened. So, we left it at that the lights started to flicker, and everyone saw it that thing for the first time.
“Sometimes in the late hours of darkness, I hear the wind whirling, whistling and when I listen with my minds eye.... I hear the cries of children, the hunger, the sickness, I hear moans coming from the walls as if they are recorded in the stone. I try not to listen, I really do, but I am drawn to such things from the past. Every night the cries become stronger and more pronounced”
That night as I lay in bed I went over and over in my head what had happened. I hate to say this but, I was afraid to close my eyes, afraid to listen (really listen) finally sleep over came me. I don’t remember dreaming, I must have had a restful night as I woke to the sun coming up and the church bell ringing....
We all sat in he kitchen having coffee that morning, no one said a word for awhile... other than “pass the sugar”. It was like no wanted to believe what had happen and what we all had seen in the hallway outside the kitchen. Maybe they were afraid, but as for me I was bursting inside to start talking. I have to admit I was scared, but somehow I was also excited. The door bell rang, breaking the silence and the first thing Ramona said was; “Old man don’t you mention a word about last night.... I know you cant wait to tell someone”...
Susan came over as she does some mornings, and the conversation was as usual about what was going on in the village, more or less gossip. Susan reads tarot and tea leaves and she is a highly intuitive person. I knew she would sense something was going on as, there was a nervous energy about the room. We have had many conversations about the occult and the spirit world. Finally, Susan said; “ok.... What he heck is going on here? So, I started telling her what had happen. Susan just looked at me, very puzzled. “You got to be kidding dad!, this house was clean when you moved in”. I said; “I know, I know”.
It was like pouring cold water on the conversation as Susan said she had to leave for an appointment. Everyone started getting ready for the day and left me sitting here at the table. An hour or so later the kids were off to school and everyone gone and I found myself alone in this big house and I felt a bit uneasy. I wanted to ask question of the neighbor about the history of this house, but they already thought we were a little strange as they call us, the exotic family” for one reason or another, so I went to work outside and the rest of the day was quite normal and uneventful.
The Keller is where we keep the fridge with all the cold drinks, so this night I went to get me a bier and as usual I turned the light on from the downstairs hallway, I opened the door and started down the stairs then the light went off. Hummm, must have blown the light bulb, so I went back up and noticed the switch was off as it has a small light on it. I turned it back on and preceded down the stairs.... yes, your right... it went off again. Now I was a little creeped out and decided to forget it. I ran up the stairs as fast as I could! It´s is funny how such a small thing as a light can scare you into a panic.
So, I asked myself.. “should I tell everyone or not?”... Ok... not. I refuse to mention it and why should I, always be the one to cry fire anyway. I entered the kitchen and they all were sitting here white as sheets, I said; “ What’s wrong”? Ramona began; “ That thing was in the bed room” “That black thing we all saw in the hallway and she began to cry”. My daughter said, dad you got to do something about this! “ You the one who got all them powers you keep talking about”. I didn’t know what to say. The silence was broken and the lights began flickering, then I got my first real view of the “black thing”. The temperature dropped to what felt like subzero, the air smelled musty like mildew. from the wall behind the stove this dark, the black shadow came out of the wall and across the kitchen and right out the door.
It happen so fast, I was unable to realize what was happening, unable to grasp it. Maybe I was in shock of sorts. Then the lights went off and on, the doors were slamming all over the house over and over, then I heard my grandson screaming “Grandpa help, something is in my room!” Without a thought, I leaped through the door and up the stairs in a total panic.. and as I entered his room the whole room was stinking like rotting meat, paper whirling around.... the whole room was out of control... and there it was.... that evil shadow hovering at the foot of that poor kids bed. The fear on his face cannot be described in written word.
“As I gazed into that “thing”, it was formless, void of life and the darkness within it was without end”......... It was the sum total of evil.
