It's odd. Onions never gave me any issues until I got pregnant with my eldest...ever since then. Man! Lighting a candle right by where your cutting them does seem to help a bit though. |
Date: 10/20/2008 11:37:00 AM From Authorid: 44960 Onions can get very angry when approached with a knife!! *Spirit* |
Date: 10/20/2008 11:39:00 AM From Authorid: 49101 Wear sun glasses next time! |
Date: 10/20/2008 11:48:00 AM From Authorid: 28848 I've heard if you put them in the freezer for a while before cutting it wont do this. I've never tried it though. |

Date: 10/20/2008 12:07:00 PM From Authorid: 3835 Onions never really got to me like that. I guess it is because I can cut them and eat them, like someone eats an apple. My family freaks out when I do that, and they do not come near me for awhile afterwards, LOL.. but hey!! I do not catch colds |
Date: 10/20/2008 12:11:00 PM From Authorid: 28848 Here try this: http://www.howtodothings.com/food-drink/how-to-cut-onions-with-no-tears |
Date: 10/20/2008 12:17:00 PM From Authorid: 16845 I wear glasses, so I wouldn't think wearing sunglasses would make a lick of difference. Unless they were the kind that hugs tight around your eyes.. |
Date: 10/20/2008 12:20:00 PM From Authorid: 49101 Well, I've heard rumor that it does. *shrugs* it's worth a shot! |
Date: 10/20/2008 12:48:00 PM From Authorid: 13546 I really don't like cutting onions, they make me cry all the time!! Try chewing gum when you cut them. some have said, use goggles as well. If you have a really sharp knife then onions won't make your eyes burn and cry. |
Date: 10/20/2008 1:01:00 PM From Authorid: 61847 I've tried running them under water. That helps a lot actually. But the website RM gave has some great advice. According to it...sunglasses are a bad idea. *hugs* |
Date: 10/20/2008 1:30:00 PM From Authorid: 53052 i've found putting them in the fridge helps when cutting them |
Date: 10/20/2008 1:30:00 PM From Authorid: 10773 Hehe, these replies are interesting. The only deterrent I've heard of was chewing gum, as RA said. I haven't tried that, though. I try to pass onion-cutting to others so I don't have to deal with watery eyes. XD |
Date: 10/20/2008 2:04:00 PM From Authorid: 14754 i only like sweet walla walla onions. |

Date: 10/20/2008 3:26:00 PM From Authorid: 21903 I used to be the slicer at a pizza place I worked at...the onions were terrible....but then we switched from yellow to red onions. Someone (meanly) told me they were more mild....WRONG! I had tears STREAMING down my face first time I cut the red onions! lol!! |

Date: 10/20/2008 4:51:00 PM From Authorid: 22188 They tested different theories on "Food Detectives" with Ted Allen a couple weeks ago, and they concluded that chilling or freezing the onion before cutting it was the best way to go, with running it under cold water coming in second (probably based on the same principle). Personally, I like to just use an onion chopper, like the one my mom got from Pampered Chef. I really miss it when I'm cooking at home (I don't normally use a lot of onion hehe). |

Place the onion in the fridge or freezer for about five minutes makes it easier on the eyes. Run cold water and cut the onion on the cutting board by the sink. Place a stainless steel knife between both hands to rid hands of onion smells. Nah, doesn't bother me I don't tear up anymore lol. Or, you could just get a food chopper banutta butt:=P |
Date: 10/20/2008 5:58:00 PM From Authorid: 3901 I find eating a piece of onion while cutting them helps |
Date: 10/21/2008 6:19:00 AM From Authorid: 49101 I also thought that I heard somewhere that the actual crying and eyes stining is not from anything getting into your eyes, but rather into your sinus cavity. ? |
Date: 10/21/2008 10:46:00 AM ( From Author ) From Authorid: 43015 I am so going to try some of those the next time I have to cut an onion! =) |
