If the change is over say $20, I will count their change out as I am handing it to them, but never count it back as the full amount given to me. |

Yes, I counted back the change, unless it was something like thirteen cents, you know. |

Used to be a time when *gasp* the cash register never automatically gave you the total amount the person recieved back and you had to count it to make certain they got the correct change. In today's time where the register tells you how much change to give the person back, it does tend to make the cashier's laxed in math skills.... |

That's how you count back change lol. That's how I was taught to do it and actually, it is considered rude for a cashier not to do it but, I've noticed anymore no one knows how to do it and for the record I am not elderly lol. But, it is just like in your example if it cost $6.50 and she gave you a ten then starting with the two quarters you would give her the two quarters and say 7, followed by the three ones which would be 8, 9, and ten. |

many placaes around here do that but many don't... if i think about it.. it's an older person (aka over 30) that counts back vrs a young person (teenager) though i've also found that younger people rely alot on the register to tell them how much change to give back not knowing that if a person buys an item for say 4.50 and pays with a $10..to know to give back 5.50 without looking at the computer |

Nani, I bet you're right..she usually is with these other few elder ladies and I have a feeling that they were talking about that kind of stuff in the world, and when she saw a teenager(me) she figured that she can get her two cents in or something |

YES, I can count back the change, tried to teach my stepchildren how to do it and they can't, it is very simple IF you just stop and think about what you are doing.. If the total is say $10.30 and they give $20, then the "change" would be $.70 is counted as $11 and each dollar after would be...4 one dollar bills and a $5 dollar bill, which is $9.70...simple |

just remember you can't please everyone... some people will look at you wierd by counting it back.. i remember when someone got annoyed with me becuase i put the loose change in thier hand THEN the bills and said i was supose to do it the other way around bills in hand then change ontop... though personally i prefer the other way around its less likely the person will drop the change that way |

Yes I can. I actually had a job as a cashier at a clothing store where we HAD to count back the change or we could be fired if we were caught not doing it. However, it was a elderly man that owned the like 4 stores and only women were allowed to work in the store because it was "easy" work and a "womans job", and men worked in the warehouse because that's a "mans job". So it could just be because he was elderly and wanting the counting back change thing because that's how it used to be. |

I never count back change.. and if an elderly person made a comment about it to me, I'd tell them that I was a newfangled robot sent from the future and I never make errors. |

Yes I grew up in that era where the cash registers didn't tell the cashier how much change to give LOL!!I find the older cashiers always count back the change, most of the young ones although not all of them do not... |

Yep I know how to. Whether the cashier does it or not doesn't matter to me..what bothers me is when they hand it to me, and they put the bills in my hand first THEN the coin on top of the bills..drives me crazy! I always drop the coins :S |

Yeah, I was a bank teller back in my early 20's so of course I know how to count back change. I don't think younger people know how to do it because they are use to dealing with debit cards...in fact, I notice young workers get really impatient when I try to dig out change. |

yes. i don't know why the don't teach that in school anymore. it's simple math. if i can do it a drunk monkey can do it! i guess that's why they don't teach it in school anymore... it's too simple. they have to complicate it all up and turn a simple math problem into rocket science. |

Yes...I grew up counting it! The cash register we had for the longest time (for my family's business) was made in like 1912 or something! It had nothing to help count things out! So I'm pretty good at figuring it out in my head. Plus, I just think it's plain courteous to count it back to the customer. |

Yes I can. Also if you own them 17.24 and you count it back, they can't say that you only gave them 12.24. Helps to keep them honest. |

I can. I was taught by an older couple who I worked for, for awhile. I don't particularly like it. But it's proper. And I do it. Also, a lot of people use their cards instead of cash. |
