Can you count back change?

Hey USMers

So today at work, this elderly lady (who went to my church) came up to the cash register ready to pay. I did the whole jazz, and went to give back her change. She looked at me and asked me to count it back to her. I looked at her and was like "okay.." so she gave me back the change and I started to count the coins and dollars.  Apparently I did it wrong because she started going on a rampage about how back in the day nobody took their change unless the casheir counted it back to them, and how the school should teach them how to count back the money instead of teaching sex and how back in the day when she was in school she never heard such things and how she thinks it's stupid that most people can't count back change and how bad the world has gotten. I can't remember half the things she was talking about but she was TICKED.

Apparently the right way to do it is like..for example..if the meal cost $6.50, and the person gave a $10, you'd say "6.50 plus 7 (the two quarters) and eight..nine...ten (the 3 ones)" or something like that.

But yeah..would you know how to count back the change?

Date: 10/12/2008 8:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 15677    yes many jobs of doing so
Date: 10/12/2008 8:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 11251    If the change is over say $20, I will count their change out as I am handing it to them, but never count it back as the full amount given to me.
Date: 10/12/2008 8:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 10773    Yes, I counted back the change, unless it was something like thirteen cents, you know.
Date: 10/12/2008 8:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    Used to be a time when *gasp* the cash register never automatically gave you the total amount the person recieved back and you had to count it to make certain they got the correct change. In today's time where the register tells you how much change to give the person back, it does tend to make the cashier's laxed in math skills....
Date: 10/12/2008 8:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 3835    And yes, I can count back change to someone.
Date: 10/12/2008 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 10657    That's how you count back change lol. That's how I was taught to do it and actually, it is considered rude for a cashier not to do it but, I've noticed anymore no one knows how to do it and for the record I am not elderly lol. But, it is just like in your example if it cost $6.50 and she gave you a ten then starting with the two quarters you would give her the two quarters and say 7, followed by the three ones which would be 8, 9, and ten.
Date: 10/12/2008 8:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    many placaes around here do that but many don't... if i think about it.. it's an older person (aka over 30) that counts back vrs a young person (teenager) though i've also found that younger people rely alot on the register to tell them how much change to give back not knowing that if a person buys an item for say 4.50 and pays with a $10..to know to give back 5.50 without looking at the computer
Date: 10/12/2008 8:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 53961    Yes, I grew up in that era, before cash registers told you how much...
Date: 10/12/2008 8:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 43015    wow..I never knew it was that common..I suppose I should start learning how to do it before I get chewed out again, huh? lol I've never been good with math..I admit I've grown accostomed to the calculator and is hard for me to go without it =(
Date: 10/12/2008 9:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    Girl, she was baiting you in so she could rant. Sorry you had to go through that.
Date: 10/12/2008 9:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 43015    Nani, I bet you're right..she usually is with these other few elder ladies and I have a feeling that they were talking about that kind of stuff in the world, and when she saw a teenager(me) she figured that she can get her two cents in or something
Date: 10/12/2008 9:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 64197    YES, I can count back the change, tried to teach my stepchildren how to do it and they can't, it is very simple IF you just stop and think about what you are doing.. If the total is say $10.30 and they give $20, then the "change" would be $.70 is counted as $11 and each dollar after would be...4 one dollar bills and a $5 dollar bill, which is $9.70...simple
Date: 10/12/2008 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 62679    I don't know how..I get confuzzled!
Date: 10/12/2008 9:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    just remember you can't please everyone... some people will look at you wierd by counting it back.. i remember when someone got annoyed with me becuase i put the loose change in thier hand THEN the bills and said i was supose to do it the other way around bills in hand then change ontop... though personally i prefer the other way around its less likely the person will drop the change that way
Date: 10/12/2008 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 63243    Yes I can. I actually had a job as a cashier at a clothing store where we HAD to count back the change or we could be fired if we were caught not doing it. However, it was a elderly man that owned the like 4 stores and only women were allowed to work in the store because it was "easy" work and a "womans job", and men worked in the warehouse because that's a "mans job". So it could just be because he was elderly and wanting the counting back change thing because that's how it used to be.
Date: 10/12/2008 10:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    I never count back change.. and if an elderly person made a comment about it to me, I'd tell them that I was a newfangled robot sent from the future and I never make errors.
Date: 10/12/2008 10:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    Yes I grew up in that era where the cash registers didn't tell the cashier how much change to give LOL!!I find the older cashiers always count back the change, most of the young ones although not all of them do not...
Date: 10/13/2008 12:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 59418    Yes, I have to do that when I'm working in the ice cream shop...Bit confusing at first but you get used to it! Just practice
Date: 10/13/2008 4:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 22433    Yep I know how to. Whether the cashier does it or not doesn't matter to me..what bothers me is when they hand it to me, and they put the bills in my hand first THEN the coin on top of the bills..drives me crazy! I always drop the coins :S
Date: 10/13/2008 5:12:00 AM  From Authorid: 17275    Yes but have to think about it first LOL
Date: 10/13/2008 5:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Yeah, I was a bank teller back in my early 20's so of course I know how to count back change. I don't think younger people know how to do it because they are use to dealing with debit cards...in fact, I notice young workers get really impatient when I try to dig out change.
Date: 10/13/2008 6:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    Yes, and I expect no less from a cashier serving me.....although they rarely do it these days.
Date: 10/13/2008 6:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 52746    Yes, absolutely. We learnt this stuff in school. Some cashires still do this while some don't.
Date: 10/13/2008 7:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    yes. i don't know why the don't teach that in school anymore. it's simple math. if i can do it a drunk monkey can do it! i guess that's why they don't teach it in school anymore... it's too simple. they have to complicate it all up and turn a simple math problem into rocket science.
Date: 10/13/2008 8:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 33286    of course.
Date: 10/13/2008 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 7341    Yes...I grew up counting it! The cash register we had for the longest time (for my family's business) was made in like 1912 or something! It had nothing to help count things out! So I'm pretty good at figuring it out in my head. Plus, I just think it's plain courteous to count it back to the customer.
Date: 10/13/2008 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 15362    Yes I can. Also if you own them 17.24 and you count it back, they can't say that you only gave them 12.24. Helps to keep them honest.
Date: 10/13/2008 4:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 31531    Yes I can count back change,I have had lots of young people who waited on me who can't!
Sorry you had a bad incounter with a person like that.>>> HUGS>>>

Date: 10/13/2008 10:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 63961    I can. I was taught by an older couple who I worked for, for awhile. I don't particularly like it. But it's proper. And I do it. Also, a lot of people use their cards instead of cash.
Date: 10/14/2008 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 35438    I certainly do.
Date: 10/14/2008 10:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 64123    I always count back the change..that makes seven, eight, nine and ten etc. Its not mandatory where I work but I do it as a safety measure to avoid any disputes later.
Date: 10/14/2008 10:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 64123    And on a side note, anyone handling cash SHOULD know how to count back change properly, even if its not a policy.
