I know many of us are interested in the upcoming presidential election. There are so many issues in this election that are going to affect all of us and our country so much. I am an animal lover, although I do acknowledge that there are issues I find more important in this country that are going on right now. I still found it interesting to read how the candidates stand on issues concerning animal rights though. I read this article in an issue of Cosmo girl, so if anyone finds any flaws in it let me know, lol. I do not know how reliable of source it is.

Barack Obama: According to the magazine, Senator Obama is strongly dedicated to reducing animal cruelty and violence. He believes that the penalties for abusing animals needs to be increased and that those who abuse animals should be required to attend psychological counseling. "Violence toward animals is linked with violent behavior in general, especially domestic violence, and we need to acknowledge this connection," he has said. Senator Obama voted in favor of amending the Humane Care for Animals Act to make animal torture a serious felony, and the taunting and teasing of rescue dogs a misdemeanor. Additionally, Senator Obama understands that a pet is an important part of the family. "We must craft policies that honor those bonds and that respect that for most Americans, a pet is a member of the family," he has said. In fact, his family is going to be adding another member to the family shortly — he promised his daughters that he'd adopt a dog for them if they let him run for President. Like Senator Clinton, Senator Obama has voted in favor of important laws like the Animal Welfare Act and the Humane Methods Slaughter Act.

John McCain: Senator McCain is a strong supporter of animal welfare issues. He cosponsored a bill to stop horse slaughter, and he also supported a bill to stop the shipment of live birds between states for the sole purpose of cockfighting. He also backed a bill that aimed to put an end to people killing bears for the purpose of selling or trading their organs. He also took a stand against the fur industry, voting to eliminate a $2 million subsidiary they had been receiving. And he also voted against allowing oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, saving the thousands of animals who lived there.

John McCain definitely sounds like he is an animal lover. I wonder how he feels about Sarah Palin's support of aerial hunting of wolves, lol. I also like how Obama believes that people who abuse animals should be forced into counseling. Additionally, I like how he wants to make animal torture a serious felony. It sounds like both candidates have good views on animal rights to me.

I hope not to start a debate with this post. I just found it interesting to hear how both candidates stand on animal rights issues.

How it changed my life:

You never really hear animal rights being brought up during elections. It was interesting to read how the candidates stand on those issues.

Date: 10/9/2008 5:52:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    LOL, it would be interesting to see how cats would vote in the election.
Date: 10/9/2008 5:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 63026    Well it's been proven if a kid at a young age, likes torturing animals, it's one of the biggest signs they will be a serial killer. It was on a Dr.Phil hour special, and it was very interesting. I personally think all wildwife should be protected, but I think the hunters should have their space and rights too. Heres what I mean I dont anyone should go out and kill 100 wild deer, turkey, or any type of animal, just for the sake of it...
Date: 10/9/2008 5:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 23075    I'll vote for anyone as long as it is Stephen Harper.......ooooooooooooooo that man just irritates the living snot out of me like you wouldn't believe.
Date: 10/9/2008 5:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    I agree. I used to be adamantly against hunting of any kind. But I have realized that it may actually be a good thing in situations of over population. I do think the carcass of the animal should be utilized as much as possible though. Otherwise, it just seems kind of like a waste of the animals life to me.
Date: 10/9/2008 7:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 21764    yay! i didn't know obama's views on that, thanks for the good info!
Date: 10/9/2008 8:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 64637    Hey! I support the aerial hunting of wolves. Do you even know why they do that? Half the people in alaska rely on subsistence living- hunting for food. the wolves multiply alot faster than the moose, and caribou. they were literally obliterating the species and the culture of the native people. It wasn't for hunting. In addition, they steal our dogs, cats, chickens, anything they can get to when you live in the bush. Another thing, the wolves were chasing the moose down from the mountain, and so many of them get hit by cars in the city. I think it is awesome that they are both for animal rights, that's great. But what about our rights? Why do I have to choose between healthcare and feeding my children? ~~~~MidnightSun
Date: 10/9/2008 10:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    I like Barack Obama, because he is strongly anti-breed specific legislation. Just one more reason he gets my vote.
Date: 10/10/2008 12:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    I agree that anyone who believes in rights for animals in a much more humane person to people. It is well documented in looking at the past of serial killers, deviants and those who torcher other people. Their path is clearly linked to their early disdain and mistreatment of animals. In response to Midnight Sun, yes I do agree in managed animals to a point. But there certainly is more to be said for capture and relocation than outright slaughter. Here in Washington State, the indigenous wolf population was completely obliterated by the same type of logic that says any population that grows too quickly should be culled. For decades the elk, deer and other animal populations have grown out of control here because the bounty on wolves made them extinct here. They have slowly been able to reintroduce wolves back into the wild, but it has been harder than anticipated.
Date: 10/10/2008 12:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 26598    I think the candidates are agreed on the point on animal rights. The animal is to be cooked thoughly before eating.
Date: 10/10/2008 6:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    Obama tempted his own kids with a bribe? God Bless.
Date: 10/10/2008 7:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    I find it interesting that Obama says he supports and talks in a very positive manner about animal welfare. By contrasts McCain has actually supported, voted for and co-sponsored legislation for animal welafare. This one issue pretty well sums up the entire difference between both candidates on most issues. One talks, the other has done.
Date: 10/10/2008 9:26:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    LOL, yes an animal should be thoroughly cooked before eating. And I guess Obama did temp his own kids with a bribe. I hear they are thinking about getting a goldendoodle. I have always thought they are cute dogs.
Date: 10/10/2008 9:33:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    Midnight Sun, I understand that there are two sides to every story. I have been bothered by the aerial hunting of wolves issue though because it sounds almost as if it is the urban and trophy hunters who have been benefiting from it, and not necessarily the local subsistence hunters who need the meat. It also does not sound like the animals are very humanely killed. If you miss when shooting something, you can just injure it and not actually kill it. That just causes more suffering in the end. I can definitely see this happening when you are shooting at something from so far away.
Date: 10/10/2008 9:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 12709    I didn't know McCain was against the drilling in Alaska. I like him a little bit more, now.
Date: 10/10/2008 9:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 12709    That issue on wolf hunting reminds me of a video I saw in school the other day. If you take out too many wolves, it could mess up an entire ecosystem. I'm not trying to start an argument, just saying it was an interesting video. lol
Date: 10/10/2008 9:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 12709    Yeah. What Ginger said.
Date: 10/10/2008 10:09:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    I also think it is important to not completely obliterate a population of animal when trying to cut down on populations.
Date: 10/10/2008 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 11240    And, BCAR, to add to your critical thinking issue, it seems as if John McCain is actually taking away the spending of money that benefits people engaged risking animals welfare which leads to the actual aid of animals, while Obama's idea seems to be to spend money to aid PEOPLE who abuse animals, e.g., "required to attend psychological counseling" --- paid for by that universal health care system? God Bless.
Date: 10/10/2008 1:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 64498    Dont forget the bunnies they should be able to vote too!!!! Hee Hee Hee LOLOLOL HACK!
Date: 10/10/2008 1:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    Yes, I totally respect every bunnies right to vote in this election, LOL.
Date: 10/10/2008 1:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 16376    I do like the way that John McCain taking away money from the people who engage in these kinds of acts. Although I do admit that I like Obama's view on forcing people into psychological counseling. Yes, it would most likely come from our tax dollars. But in general I see a problem in this country with people recommitting crimes because they were just thrown in jail and not offered any kind of psychological counseling. And no, counseling will not cure every criminal in this country. Some will just keep recommitting crimes no matter what you do. Although I do imagine it would help with some to aid in preventing their crimes from happening again.
Date: 10/10/2008 4:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 64621    I am an animal lover also....true blue....Obama's ideas sound better to me! If he is true to his word that is.....Karrie
Date: 12/7/2008 3:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 35430    I sooo support his idea for making animal abuse into a felony. I hate animals abuse in all forms, including the ones that on my dinnerplate.
