The ghosts of the families of George Washington Parke Custis, adopted son of George Washington, and Robert E. Lee haunt this elegant house. The property was confiscated by the Federal government during the Civil War, but apparently the Custis and Lee families still consider it their own. The ghostly sounds of children playing are heard in the Morning Room, and the specter of a cat has been seen and reported by employees. Other mysterious things, such as disembodied footsteps and candles that blow themselves out, are reported regularly.Hauck, p.419.
