I was always taught that the x is the kiss and the o is the hug, but I rather believe it should be the other way around cause when you hug someone and they hug back your arms cross like and x |

It is debatable which letter represents which act. One interpretation assumes that X represents the four lips of a kiss and O the four arms of a hug. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary states that X is "used to represent a kiss, esp. in the subscription to a letter."[5] Another interpretation assumes X as the crossed arms of a hug and O as the puckered lips of a kiss,[citation needed] as the order is normally spoken "Hugs and Kisses" which would correspond to the order that the x's and o's are written. Also, it could be said that the X's are the arms crossing during a hug, and the O's are the circular shape that two people make when kissing. Additionally, there is another interpretation, based on the pronunciation of the letters X (sounds like 'kiss') and O (sounds like 'hold', as in 'I hold you').

Yes it is open to interpretation, and because they always say "xoxo" or hugs and kisses that makes me think the x's are suppose to be the hugs... |

X is a kiss. It's quite interesting actually, I read the history of it a while ago somewhere - apparently in medieval times when many people were unable to write, when signing contracts or important documents people used to instead sign with a cross (looks similar to an X), and then to prove their commitment & honesty they had to kiss it; So basically most of the history behind it is obsolete but a cross (X) still means a kiss |

actually as a kid I used to think the opposite because people would say hugs and kisses thus making me think X=hugs O=kisses as in an X being the arms wrapped around you and the O being an open mouth kissing but I soon found out I was wrong |

I grew up with the X's being kisses, and the O's being hugs. I guess it doesn't really matter...a liplock is just a face hug anyway |
