Can you get addicted? *Jessica

I was just wondering if you can get addicted to Benadryl. I have a very hard time sleeping at night and so I started taking Benadryl to help me sleep. Today was my first day of classes and at 8am I still hadn't been to bed yet. Around 10am I was feeling dead and fell asleep but slept through all my classes. I have the worst sleep cycle ever.

So anyway, It's the only thing that is non-narcotic that helps me sleep. Even when I have taken ambien and lunesta I still wake up around 1 or 2am. So I was just wondering if it is habit forming if I continue to use it to help me sleep at night?

Thanks.

-j.

Date: 8/18/2008 8:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    I just googled it and found 4 different sites that said it's neither addicting nor habit-forming (no long term use danger). I also read that a lot of people use it to sleep. To be safe, you might call your doctor or a hospital and ask a nurse on duty.
Date: 8/18/2008 8:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 64123    You'll find conflicting statements as to whether or not its addictive but there are plenty of people addicted to diphendydramine which is the drug in benadryl. Its a usual cycle, developing a tolerance and needing to take more, then becoming dependent and unable to sleep without it. So yes, its addictive. I see people come into my pharmacy daily buying multiple boxes at a time. I think occasional use is fine but otherwise, see your doctor so that he'she can determine if you have a sleep disorder that needs to be addressed formally. Zopiclone is a good prescription sleep aid that is non addictive.
Date: 8/18/2008 8:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 49763    Benadryl was originally a sleep medication before it was found out that it work against allergies If your worried give your doctor a call it's possible they have a better way for you to fall asleep ~~

Date: 8/18/2008 9:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Talk to your Doctor, anything can become easy to take and hard to give up if it results in what you need or want, just talk to your Doc to make sure its okay on a regular basis. Everything we take, our body builds a tolerance to so that at some point, it may not be as effective as when you first started this as a daily medication.
Date: 8/18/2008 9:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    Maybe a sleep study would be a good idea. Apnea can cause similar problems where we feel tired even after "sleep". Talk to your Doctor.
Date: 8/18/2008 9:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 10344    Tylenol pm is aceteminophen and diphenhydramine and is safe if used right....heres the link to tylenols website http://www.google.com/search?q=tylenol+pm&rls=com.microsoft&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1
Date: 8/18/2008 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 7830    nope i take it alot..i suppose you could get mentally addicted to thinking you have to take it but its not physically adictive.
Date: 8/18/2008 11:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I thought it was but once you start taking anything to help you to sleep and take it regularly, the mental attitude for you to be taking it sounds like a dependance to me hun...I know, I'm an insomniac...stopped taking stuff for it years ago and if I have trouble sleeping I get up and read, or watch a movie or two, sometimes three then fall into bed and sleep....its no fun not being able to sleep...*hugs*
Date: 8/19/2008 7:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 11199    it isn't habit forming, but taking it on a regular basis makes not work as effectly. in the mornings after you wake up i suggest drinking some coffee and a sweetroll to get your sugar levels up and some caffiene in your system so you wont feel so sluggish.
Date: 8/19/2008 7:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 11199    starchazer take benadryl to fall asleep all the time. she has since she was about 8 years old. but she is also ADHD.
Benadryl is an antihistamine which blocks histamine in your body therefore making your allergies calm down, it has an interesting side effect it outs you to sleep. you might start taking the benadryl around 8pm and then take a hot bath before going to bed.

Date: 8/19/2008 1:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 14909    You can take with no problem for sleep. My doctor said that's what I should use before anything else. You can also use it for mild anxiety and panic attacks. It's mostly used for allergies though.
