So, Cameron has never been to the beach before [since he's from the midwest], so I suggested that we go to the shore on our day off on Thursday.
It was only about an hour drive and there was virtually NO traffic which was extremely pleasant. We wound up visiting Long Branch, NJ which was surprisingly nice and very, very clean. [My experience with the Jersey shore before that hadn't been fantastic.]
The first great thing that happened was we got a parking spot immediately. Someone was pulling out right next to the boardwalk and we pulled right in. We didn't even have to pay for a parking fee.
We went into one of the surf shops on the boardwalk to pick up some swimsuits. Cameron found a cheap pair of trunks and my favorite suit was a black and white striped bikini which happened to be the cheapest on the rack [$60]. I don't have the highest self esteem in the world and never really did, so buying a bikini was a big step for me.. and wearing it was an even bigger step.. but I did it with confidence! It was really flattering and I felt really good in it. I'd post pictures, but I won't for obvious G-rating reasons.
We frolicked in the waves for a little while, but since Cameron had never swam in the ocean, he didn't know about undertow and wound up swimming a little too far out.. the waves were really rough and I started panicking and ran onto the beach to get someone to help him. The waves eventually threw him towards some rocks and he climbed up on them.. some guy swam out to help him back.. I was really scared, but thankfully, we walked away unscathed.. except for some scrapes. I have a nice gash across my foot from running through rocks.
We spent most of the rest of our time on the boardwalk. There was a guy with an African Grey parrot who did tricks.. it was really cute. They had a live cover band and a Tiki bar. We ate at a little sandwich shop and walked along the beach.
It was really fun.. I'm glad we did it. I hadn't been to the beach in a couple of years and it was nice to take the day off and relax near the shore.
