“The day comes…like a furnace...that day shall set them ablaze, it shall leave them neither root nor branch...the sun shall rise with healing in his wings…” Malachi 3: 1-2
Yellowstone National Park February 5th, 2005
Mindy winced at the strong sulfur smell and continued towards the blue geyser. She never should have made that right turn at the intersection. They made an odd looking couple as they walked; the pretty girl and the old man.
She was beautiful in fact; quite, quite beautiful.
Papa, can you smell that?"
Her long black hair hung down her back, rippling like an oily tide as she walked the steps.
"It smells like rotten eggs."
She was tall, slim and wore designer blue jeans and cowboy boots. The way she turned the collar up on the tan leather jacket was effective.
Mindy moved with a model’s natural grace. It was smooth and controlled, as if she was used to be watched.
The men who took quick glances didn’t care where she came from because all they knew was she was exquisite.
Her high cheekbones were well defined and her milky tea skin radiated an inner glow.
Every now and then a color from one of the geysers would catch her eye, and she would point and smile.
Mindy’s father was an elderly gentleman, a half head shorter and two ages older. His face was leathered by years of tracking the sun.
She had been born when her dad was in his fifties and it had not been easy.
Dr Yu was very proud of his daughter. She was working in DNA research and hoped this outing could make up for his missing out on a large part of her life. JPL was his true passion, being director of the space imaging left little time for his family.
It had always been this way as long as he could remember, reminding him of the classified legacy program related to the Vatican. It was so shrouded in mystery that the boards of directors were unaware.
He was wondering if he should broach the subject with his daughter.
"Papa, our research in mitochondrial DNA is specific to women only. We found that around thirty thousand years ago there was a major reduction in the human gene pool. A population in the several millions was reduced to approximately four thousand people.
Core samples point to the eruption of a super-volcano near Java, three hundred times more powerful than Mt. St. Helens. The beleive there's a connection between that event and the next super volcano. The only questions are what set off the past event and when will the next occur?"
He looked into his daughters eyes and prepared himself before speaking. He calmed his thoughts and took in a deep breath. Dr. Yu now realized that the secret legacy program was coming very close to answering both questions.
He needed to get back to the office and do more research, measure twice and cut once was his motto.
"I thought something was bothering you, please don't get upset. I'm sure we have plenty of time before this next eruption, "
He did his best to maintain eye contact, hoping she wouldn't detect his inner turmoil.
