Question about pain medications.

Hi guys. Just a question...I'm having surgery in about 3 weeks. I picked up prescriptions today for 5 different pills, including an antibiotic, 2 different painkillers, an anti-nausea, and one other for which purpose I am unsure. My problem is that in the past I have been extremely sensitive to many painkillers; my last surgery a few years ago I went through Tylenol 3, Vicodin, Codeine, and morphine unsuccessfully before they concluded I have an allergy to codeine and just couldn't keep any of the others down without nausea and vomiting them back up before they could help with the pain. I ended up getting prescribed Darvocet, which made me feel motion-sick, yet didn't come back up at least...but didn't help the pain at all. I had given up and figured the pain was better than any of the side effects from these medications.

This time the painkillers I was prescribed are Dilaudin, and again Darvocet, after discussing my past problems with my doctor. I know nothing about Dilaudin, other than the fact that I was warned that it was an extremely controlled substance, which scared the heck out of me. Sounds like something I shouldn't be taking with all my other problems! Has anyone had any experience with any of these drugs and/or worked in a medical field that could help me determine how this will make me feel? I'm nervous about the surgery to begin with, it's going to be extremely painful from what I hear but the nausea will be even worse if I take the wrong thing! Or will the anti-nausea they are giving me (Zofran) combat the nausea from the meds? Thanks in advance on any advice anyone can give me!

Date: 6/14/2008 4:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    Yes hun before you have the surgery tell them of the post operative nausea and they can give you a drug to combat that...I don't know of those drugs over here hun but I know I have an allergy to Codeine and lots of meds have it in them....so discuss it with the doctor before surgery and I wish you all the very best and hope all goes well for you sweetie...*hugs*

Date: 6/14/2008 6:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 49976    I had surgery a couple weeks ago and they gave me an anti nausea med to take with the pain pills ask your dr about doing that. I don't know if you can with those pills or not but it's worth asking.
Date: 6/14/2008 8:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 63241    Having gone through addiction to painkillers after back surgery, I'll tell you what therapists told me. (I've had painkillers since then for serious ear infections and their advice worked in keeping me from becoming addicted again.) They told me that painkillers are good for the healing process in that they help a patient's blood pressure to go down and they help the patient sleep which is good for the healing process. BUT before you take a painkiller, evaluate your level of pain...if a tylenol or any over the counter medication will help good enough then take that instead. IF you need something stronger, then take the pain medication. ALWAYS evaluate your pain before you take the medication. The problem arises with addiction, when you take the pain medication without being in pain. It's basically a judgment call on your sensitivity to pain. It doesn't matter how strong or how many pain pills you take, it matters if you're in pain or not. Believe me, the doctor would not have prescribed those strong painkillers if he/she didn't think you needed them, especially nowadays. Use them for the purpose they were intended and you won't become addicted. I hope they work for you!
Date: 6/14/2008 8:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 63725    I wqas given delaudid (sp) after my recent colon surgery once I was off the IV of morphine. Nausea tends to follow me too but they gave me something for that. I am also sensitive to codeine. The nausea meds helped me. Good luck and I am saying a prayer for you. HUGS
Date: 6/14/2008 10:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 14754    Dilaudid, a narcotic analgesic, is prescribed for the relief of moderate to severe pain. its the same as the others you have tried, they are just trying to help you
Date: 6/14/2008 10:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 62100    The anti-emetic (nausea) medication they prescribed is *probably* prescribed on an " so many hours as needed" deal to combat the nausea that you described happening with pain medication in the past..the best way for you to get the answers as to what to expect would be to talk to your doctors...I'm an LPN and I can look them up and give you a million things that *could* happen as a side effect to each medication, but really..the best source for info is ALWAYS your own personal MD as they know you, your history and why they prescribed what..so talk to the MD till you have the answers that you need in a way that you understand..
Date: 6/14/2008 2:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    I personally am on loritab 7.5 three times a day, but when I had my bladder surgery they were giving me Dilaudin by IV every hour, it did work good but it made me sleep alot. I'm sorry your allergic to codien, I'm slightly sometimes it makes me itch a little. The loritabs dont, but the tylenol 3 and 4's do. Darvocet doesn't do any good as far as I'm concerned and if you have to have a nausa med, tell them to give you promethizine as that is the best one on the market as far as I'm concerned. I have to use it alot due to a variety of reasons and that is the only one that really works for me. As far as the pain meds go, I can't really give you any advice because you are allergic to codien. I just dont know which ones have codien in them. But yes the Dilaudin does work very well. I pray all goes well for you on your surgery.
Date: 6/14/2008 7:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 63572    I've never had Dilaudin before but I'd assume the anti nausea stuff is because of how you've responded to pain meds before. Although I've never found them to be helpful to me before, a bottle of peptobismol works a little better than the perscription stuff but tastes awful. talk to your doctor to find out why each of those was percribed to you and what you should do if you have problems with them.
Date: 6/15/2008 1:08:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63042    Thanks for all the replies, advice, and well-wishes, guys! It never really occured to me that it could be a reaction to the anesthesia itself that caused my nausea...but I suppose it could be a factor. It's good to hear of other people's experiences with these medications before I take them myself so I know what I'm getting myself into.
Date: 6/16/2008 11:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 57232    Just to reply, sorta funny I guess. I had a bad cold and they prescribed meds and I could not kick it for anything. I don't see a dr. until I have no other choice but to. I was sick for probably 2 months before I did it. They prescribed Amoxicillin...didn't kill it...Augmentin...didn't kill it. They said that I had become immune to them?? What? The funny thing is that I have taken them since and they have worked, maybe it was just that nasty of a cold. Sorry about the no codeine thing, the morphine was a blessing for the spinal headache.
