Freaked out...

Just had to rant as I cant share this with relatives; I get ENOUGH lectures from them about my safety...to absurd points (for instance my father worried Id be eaten by sharks at the beach the other day...)

Im moving in a few weeks, as my lease is up. Overall this neighborhood is okay...but if you go too far right or left or back you start hitting what I term 'the ghetto'. Not getting shot up and such but not the best place either.

I havent had any issues really since I've lived here, except for an instance of a creepy possibly drunk old man wandering around the streets waaaay too late at night for comfort. Im always alone, and always out at night...usually this doesnt worry me but if theres someone lurking obviously there would be!

Our cable was turned off a week ago. Thats usually what I do at night so these past few nights I've alternated between music and watching DVDs on my computer. Last night I came home at 10pm and left again about midnight or 1...I needed Subway (Id only eaten 2 slices of pizza all day!!!) I came back and closed the gate. End of story I thought.

Our locks dont work. The lock on the gate doesnt work, the lock on the front entrances dont work and never have. I rent a room in a big house, my room is in the back by the backyard. I have a lock on both my doors (the one facing the yard and the one facing the hall) and they DO work. You have to go back a narrow piece of yard through a gate to get to my room and the backyard.

So I got to reading a forum between episodes and had no music or TV blaring. I SWORE at 3am I heard footsteps. But we have a lot of stray cats, so I tried to convince myself it was that. However it kept up. So I turned on my porch light and looked out my door window but I didnt see anything; its a weak porch light and Im blind in the darkness. I have a window on the door thats covered with blinds, and a window hiiiigh above my bed that is long, and the blinds are broken but given my back faces this wall there isnt much to be watching if you were a peeping Tom or something. I was online all last night...unless you wanna watch me laugh myself stupid at sitcoms it wasnt that exciting.

Anyways I decided to stay up waaaaay longer then I wanted until sunlight hit...just so I felt better. My roommates were all asleep and we have no guests at the moment. I stayed up till 5 and SWORE I heard the footsteps again. I decided I was just getting loopy and went to the bathroom (which also faces that walkway) to get ready for bed.

The window in the bathroom was part open, as its hot out and the airconditioning doesnt reach the bathroom. So I could see the lower end of the yard. I start taking my contacts out and BOOM theres someone walking!!!!!!!!

It was a man, not overtly disguised or anything, and not very tall. I didnt see him carrying anything. He was walking casually like nothing at all was weird about this. He either didnt notice I could see him or didnt care (probably couldnt tell). He just kept walking casually and here I am like *frozen*. I heard a car start and that was that.

I consulted with my roommates when I woke up and they said no one was up and no one should have been around. This guy did not resemble anyone I know or have met. I went outside today and one our plastic chairs was over in the area I had heard the footsteps. It was facing my room, facing the door. BUT if this was to peep I dont know what good it would do, I even tried looking. There wasnt anything you could see!

AHHHHHHHH!!! I called the cops and they said basically either I can go down and file a police report (I dont have the time today) or if it happens again I should call them ASAP. This is a major city and every time (even when in need of them) I've called them I get a 2 hour delayed response so thats why it didnt register to do that last night. Also I just WANTED to be paranoid...not right. Why do I ever doubt myself?

I will be out tonight, but I am going to go buy me some mace before I do anything else. CREEPY!

Date: 5/17/2008 4:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 10657    Well, is it possible he was visiting a neighbor nearby?? I live in a metropoltian area now too in a house with just myself and the two kiddos whom are to young to be of any help. Anyhow, sometimes we can freak our ownselves out more than anything else.
Date: 5/17/2008 4:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    Like TADA says, sometimes we can freak ourselves out. I've done that many times. But, I haven't seen someone walking out of my yard either. That would've been very unnerving. Yep, think I would get myself some mace too. Although, when I'm creeped out, I sleep with a can of fly spray next to me. LOL with the nozzle pointed outwards.

Date: 5/18/2008 3:39:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15675    LOL Angel Marie I shoulda! Well this is the thing: our backyard is very VERY fenced off from every angle. The only entry besides out of the house if this little narrow (literally enough for a person and then theres several bushes on both sides) walkway which I mentioned. To get to that walkway you have to walk all the way past the front of our house, and past the neighbors house, open the gate, and walk back here.

To do so accidentally you'd have to be stone drunk or stupid. Possible but still freaky. And doesnt explain 2 hours...

Date: 5/18/2008 11:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 15677    I would be finding a way to lock the doors or block them and next time u hear something dont turn the light on, leave it off an look out U can see better that way.
Date: 5/18/2008 12:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 30229    That is something to be concerned about. I would have called police right then and there. Be very careful, sweety!!! Keep your eyes open and STAY SAFE... there are mean people in this world, and I don't want anything to happen to you!!!
Date: 5/19/2008 7:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 63241    I have a pocket alarm that works when you pull the pin out of it...people next door can hear it! It fits in my pocket and when I go outdoors at night, it's with me. The last thing a burglar/rapist/peeping tom wants is loud noise attracting attention. Buy one at Wal-Mart. (I guess I watch too much Tru TV, cuz I don't trust anybody roaming around late at night.)
