The Word 'Idolatary' Is Misplaced.

I don't want to cause a big huge flamewar by questioning an aspect of the Christian religion so I am placing my opinion in 'General Interest'. Now...I've been thinking about the word 'idolatry' a lot and its definition to Christians, which is worshipping an idol more than your God. However, I have found some holes in the logic for it. According to Christianity, an idol is a 'false god' because it just a statue, although a building to God is more than a building to them. But, going by that logic, if a statue of a god is not a temporary house for that god like a church, then that means if you go to church, you must be worshiping a building, and not your true God. And that also means if you pray to a cross symbol you wear around your neck, you must be performing idolatary as well, and yeah, praying to church symbols is something that's been debated for years.

The next part of its definition I am wondering about is how the Christian definition makes no distinction worshiping something AS a god or worshiping something LIKE a god. Those are two different things! To me, if you worship something AS a god, like a car, then you should get your head checked. If you worship something LIKE a god, then that means you will give your shiny new red car as much attention as God or whoever you worship, but your main deity will always be #1...it's just a difference of priorities, I guess. I personally think 'idolatry' should be renamed 'object centrism' based on what I perceive as its definition. Yeah, secular term, but I think it fits what's really going on better.

Feel free to debate me. No flamewars allowed, just place your own opinions regarding idolatry's definition.

Cheers, Suu999

How it changed my life:

There's been no such thing as an American Idol since Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. Those contestants just don't cut it. And no, I don't worship any stars, I think they're all lame.

Date: 5/12/2008 9:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 64593    I believe and idol can be anything that is put before God. Whether, it is playing video games, spending hours a day tending to your car, not being in a constant state of prayer or worship. I am guilty of putting other things before God, therefore those are my idols. Which I am trying to work on but it is difficult. Isn't it Catholics that pray to a cross? I am Baptists Christian and I only pray to God. I don't go through a cross, through another person, or anything. Only God. I may not have answered what you said correctly at all. LOL I may have just gone on talking about the complete wrong thing.
Date: 5/12/2008 11:04:00 AM  ( Admin )   We try not to have flamers here. Good discussion is what we try to have. I think that worship is in your heart and even if you look up on a statue it is only a visual reminder. Like a picture of your kids, it isn't your kids. I think people are like that, they need to see something. You have some good points. Thanks for posting.
Date: 5/12/2008 12:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    I think an Idol is anything that gets inbetween you, and your God(dess). For example: a concept, an idea can be an "idol", as well as a physical item.
