Later, someone notes that the preview states that the film is inspired by actual events, not really based on them. So, perhaps they drew from various home-invasion stories to create this one. The Hoyts are the family in "The Strangers". Several people state that it reminds them of the Manson Family murders.  |

I thought it was based off the manson ones too lol!! Though studios can get away with saying Based off of Actual Events if, something similar happened and it may not be what actually transpired  |
