I don't believe it... at all. Its artificial light and you can absorb vitamin D by going for a walk outside... thats healthy. My mom passed away to skin cancer and I am very much against tanning salons. |

I've never seen a tanning salon commercial, but I know that my chiropractors daughter ended up with skin cancer from going to them. |

They seemed to have forgotten that tans are just a result of skin damage. |

I think they are tightening up legislation here in Australia with regards to tanning machines. This is as a direct result of the links to skin cancer. |

The commercials are definitely misleading, and can influence a person's decision to get too much exposure to the sun. While sunlight is beneficial, cooking the top layers of our dermis to a golden brown damages the dermis in more ways thah one, and leaves one open to different skin cancers which can be deadly because you thought that was just a 'weird freckle', or that 'mole just got darker from sun exposure'. Tanning bed Salons don't publish the risks of tanning like they should. What a lot of people don't understand is like in the case of Melanoma. It can't be treated with chemo when it's in the skin, nor can it be treated with Radiation. It's considered the silent killer because it migrates internal if you don't find it and have it excised. It attacks every organ in the body, including the eyes. The only treatment if it gets in the eyes is removal of the eyeballs. If it goes down into your internal organs, you can take chemo, but you never know when it's going to pop up somewhere else. I had Superficial Spreading Malignant Melanoma on my arm. Thankfully I noticed the change in the large freckle and went to a Derm who excised it and discovered it was malignant, but had just become malignant. It was very thin celled. I had one more surgery...amputating a large area of tissue around the original tissue site to make doubly sure it was all gone. Because I had that one melanoma, I have to watch every freckle I have so that if they change I can go in and have it excised before it gets too far. I'm not allowed to give blood because of it. |

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/metro/5750915.html, here is an article that relates to this. It does not discuss the exact commercial that I always see, but it goes on about the whole Vitamin D thing. Glad you were ok Nani, many others don't survive it. Thanks for the comments. |

Zelena, I'm sorry about your mother. Aussie girl, that is good that they are tightening up legislation over there, they should do the same in America, but it doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon. |

LOL I've seen some of these. I tan in the winter, very infrequently, for the mood boost, but I can't imagine ANYONE thinks it's healthy to do this. Anyway, the specific one I saw was about how tanning can KEEP you from getting skin cancer because it can give you a base tan and keep you from burning in natural sunlight. Um, OK... |

Note: I also wear sunscreen when I'm at the tanning place. Waste of money, I know. But it sure does boost the mood and take the cold away for at least a few weeks when I go. |

*shakes head* Idiots. I think tanning salons are a big joke.. another cash cow stemming from the insecurity of people with their bodies.. people think it's glamorous to be bronze, so they go to these places, only to have leathery skin down the road and a huge increase in skin cancer risk. I have never been to a tanning booth in my life and never will. I'm fine being pale.. I've never been afraid to be unique and I'm also improving my health in the process. |

I've never heard of tanning being good for you. I think it's all a crock to get customers. I agree with Lavendar Wings, I think it's tacky, especially on people that excessively tan. |

There was a young girl over here in Australia this year if I remember right and she did a commercial against the tanning beds as it was causing her death, she was so lovely and it came on the tv when she passed away. So don't be fooled by those ads claiming that they are safe...they have been proven that they are not. I think the recommended daily amount of sunlight needed for health is 20 minutes daily...no more is needed than the 20 minutes. In fact I think that girl's story was on 60 minutes, I felt so sorry for her and the reporter interviewing her ended up crying... |

It is so sad to hear of people dying from skin cancer because of this. It just all needs to be put to stop really. |
