Im scared *cries* I hope they dont destroy my hair!!!

LOL!

So...I've been poor for awhile now. And cheap. Back where I used to live (in the real world) I would go for a cut and color every month to two months depending on what I needed. I had the cutest do too...it was bright blonde and 70s styled.

And it was GREAT salon. 5 star, spa, recommended to all those rich folk. But it was cheap. My cut and color together was always $100 and my eye brow waxing was $10 (this is all minus tip obviously). Considering this was a major city this was an average if not good price. And the woman knew what she was doing I was so happy :). I literally went there the whole time I lived there.

Then I moved. To THIS city. A major major city. Im scared to try anything here because everything costs 50% more then it does in the real world. Due to the move I havent had my hair cut since June last year (it looks raggedy) and I've been box dyeing it red...something I loathe but if I was doing blonde on my own it wouldnt be pretty.

I wont do my eyebrows myself because...my skin is sensitive and my hair is very thick. First time I tried to find an eyebrow waxer here I near had a heart attack. One salon...I kid you not...for an eye brow wax alone...wanted to charge me $40!!!!!!!! One was $45!!!!!! I finally found one for $15 but its not their business (ironically its one of those 'med spas' where women go to get botox on lunch; these are in all the malls here) and they quit doing it for awhile so I had to go look again. I was being told $25-$30 left and right. I finally caved and settled for a $25. It kills me inside I assure you.

Now onto my hair!!! Im sooo sick of looking like crap I finally said 'this week I'll have a little extra money...I'll get my hair cut!' I just cant bring myself to do it myself...every person I've ever known to do that just looks horrible. Im not very good with hair anyways overall so...Im scared of what *I* could do to myself LOL!

I start calling around. From the ghetto to the mansions I was being told...brace yourself USM...$75 for a HAIR CUT ALONE!!! $75!!! To shampoo my head, blow dry me, and cut my hair. $75!!!!!!! Needless to say I had a heart attack and began to wonder if Id look like a hippy until I became a wealthy woman.

I finally started thinking in desperation 'those chain salons'. I LOATHE these places. When I was growing up I was subjected to these in the most rural hillbilly of places...and the people Im not sure how they graduated beauty school (Im not offending anyone who works there; in fairness even private salons in these places were HORRIBLE). My mom would go to Cost Cutters, and she always box dyed her hair and always had the same cut. But when the woman would cut and style it she'd always make it look horrible and my mom's first duty was to run home and wash it out until it looked good. For us it was always 'run home from the salon' to 'not look like crap'. I feel that defeats the whole purpose of GOING to a salon so...needless to say I've avoided these places like the plague.

But here I am...not able to fathom more then $40 (which is still high) for a hair cut. So I thought about where Target is and I know theres a few chain salons around it. Unfortanitly I was only able to find one; Ulta. I've worked at an Ulta and I wish I could remember if I was afraid of our stylist or not but I never really paid any attention to them. Some of the reviews for it stated 'hit or miss' which didnt help. I called them up expecting to hear even them say $70. They said $50 tops. I booked it sight unseen. Im scared.

Its only a little trim right? They cant REALLY mess it up that bad can they? I may be going home late next month so maybe I'll just literally ask to trim and then go there for the real 70s do I had. Tragic. I hate this town sometimes.

***End Rant***

Date: 4/8/2008 4:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 820    Geeze! I thought paying $25 for a haircut was steep! I would NEVER cut my hair if I had to pay more than that! I go to a Regis Salon in my town (it's sort of a chain salon, I guess), but these girls really know how to cut hair. They are very familiar with the latest trends, and they know what they are doing! I've gone to the really cheap chain stores before and I will never go back. If you can't even simply trim someone's hair without messing it up, you shouldn't be cutting hair. I once asked someone at a MasterCuts if they could just trim it about an inch and layer it (I NEED layers with my naturally curly hair) and I walked out of there with a single layer bob that, when straightened, reached mid-ear (so you can imagine how short it was when it was curly). After that experience, I've always brought a picture of what I want done. Good luck! Hope it goes well for you!
Date: 4/8/2008 4:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    well...in the grand scheme of things it's only hair. But I"ve had bad cuts before, not too fun. But I say go for it, really worst thing that can happen is you'll have to wear a paper bag over your head. Or a really big hat. LOL KIDDING! If it's just a trim, shouldn't be too bad, I've had a bad trim (Wal-Mart, on a budget too) but it wasn't horrendous. I say go with the trim, then when you go home go get your hair cut how you want it for a decent price. Good luck! :-)
Date: 4/8/2008 4:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 15157    I pay only 8 dollars for a wax for my eyebrows n upperlip if I need it *giggles*...75 dollars was the most I ever paid for my hair DID lol...They banged my hair and colored it and staightened it!
Date: 4/8/2008 4:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 55297    Wow! Eyebrow waxes here are $8-10 and a haircut, shampoo, cut and style is $25. I cant imagine paying more than that... Now I go to my friend, shes a hairstlyist, and she does a great job and charges me only $12 for shampoo, cut and style. Ive never had my eyebrows waxed, but I pluck them myself... I dont want someone ripping a strip of wax off my eyebrows! Oww.
Date: 4/8/2008 5:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 64604    im so sorry you have to pay that much! I wish i could say that i understand but my mom's a professional hair stylist and has been doing mine and my sisters' (and everyone else's, for that matter) hair since birth. have you tried regis? my mom worked for regis for 18 years previously and just started there again last month and those ladies and gents have always worked wonders. i think the prices are standardized too, and aren't that bad.
Date: 4/8/2008 5:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 4887    .... wow.
Date: 4/8/2008 5:46:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15675    Thanks guys! Thats the thing of the matter: Ulta, Regis, Cost Cutters, etc are all about $40 here...they were $20-$30 in my old town. You guys with friends with skills are lucky LOL! I wish I had friends that could do it but I dont know any beauticians (maybe I should befriend some?)
Date: 4/8/2008 8:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    Where do you live again? Hollywood? I think it's so much more expensive, because the standard of living is higher out there.. $40 is what I pay for my haircuts and I made an appointment to have my hair colored which will set me back $120.. $75 is absolutely unreasonable for just a haircut no matter where you live.
Date: 4/8/2008 10:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 40979    I go to Olivers Hair which is a chain...but there is only one stylist who I will even let near me with a pair of scissors. She is my gae so she knows what I like and she gives her honest opinion. I have never paid for that 75 dollars for a trim and to get my highlights touched up. I am working on becoming a total blonde lol so I have been getting highlights for a year. I love that place :-) Chain salons are not bad if you find a decent stylist.
Date: 4/8/2008 11:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 64593    Where do you live now? Those are insane prices!! The place that did my hair charged 75 dollars for shampoo, cut, color, highlights, and style! Those places are waaaaay too pricey! I hope you can find a less expensive place soon. Would it hurt too badly to tweeze your eyebrows? I find the best time to do it is immediately after a shower. They come out easier and with less pain. Good luck with your search! ---Teal Dreams---
Date: 4/9/2008 4:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 57995    I can get a cut/blowdry/style and eyebrow wax for $20. I live in a small town though.
