Babysitting a six year old....

  Author:  30097  Category:(General Advice) Created:(4/3/2008 2:14:00 PM)

Afternoon, USM!

I've recently taken on the responsibility of babysitting a six year old girl Thursday evenings into Friday mornings.

I've watched kids in the past, of course, but it's not exactly my comfort zone. Plus, our apartment is having our floor tiles replaced, which has resulted in me and my two dogs being relocated to another apartment a few doors down. (My parents and I live in an apartment complex).

Granted...i have ALWAYS loved this little apartment, but i only took my bare necessities..nothing to occupy a six year old!

Needless to say...she doesn't occupy easily.

Also..if you guys could help me out with the ground rules *grins sheepishly*. She's not your average 6 year old, and i've enforced certain rules.

Oh, who am I kidding? *I* need advice to avoid jumping off the terrace! (And that's screened!)

Date: 4/3/2008 2:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 26303    Like TADA says! Oh, they loved to be read to. Even if she says she doesn't, just start reading out loud. You will be amazed how she will come and sit with you.
Date: 4/3/2008 3:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    Tie her up and make her watch videos until right before her parents come to pick her up. Can you tell that I have no children? LOL..Seriously, when my nephews are here I just play games or watch videos on youtube with them.
Date: 4/3/2008 3:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    drugs....lots of drugs. you may want to take up drinking too!
Date: 4/3/2008 4:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 60685    Having coloring books can help too. Just make sure you use markers and the kind that only works on a certain paper, Crayola has something like that I believe. Also, if you have a Borders near you they have this bargain section where you can get children books really cheap, some for like 2 bucks and with popular characters like Dora, and one thing I saw kids liked a lot where these storybooks where the "pages" were puzzles, I could tell kids liked them, especially since I had to pick up the mess they made when their parents left them unattended.
Date: 4/3/2008 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 8024    my advice, try not to beat her.. c
Date: 4/3/2008 6:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 5301    ...get yourself some body armor.
Date: 4/3/2008 6:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 64365    Prozac...lot's and lot's of Prozac
Date: 4/3/2008 6:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 37843    How are you with a deck of cards? You could teach her how to play go fish, memory, war, rummy... Wal mart has coloring books and crayons for a pretty good price too. Ground rules- Don't scream unless you're hurt, and don't color on anything but coloring books.
Date: 4/3/2008 6:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 37843    Play-doh is your friend (if you have a place you can set up so it doesn't get tracked all through the apartment) it may keep her occupied for a lil bit, and if you play with it too it could keep you from jumping off the terrace. Its kinda theraputic.
Date: 4/4/2008 3:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 64614    Well, I've babysat 6 year olds before...Needless to say, they are a handful...Even for me...I'm a 21 year old girl and know a lot about babysitting...Well, what I do is I play a ton of board games with them...They always enjoy those...Also, I give them some paper and crayons so that they can draw and color pictures...They enjoy that as well...In fact, we have coloring contests...When the weather's nice, I take them outside and let them wear themselves out...If you have a park nearby, take her there and just let her run around and play on the equipment...If she wants to watch a movie, ask her what her favorite movies are....If you don't have them, rent a couple each week...Well, that's what I do....I hope this helps!

Date: 4/4/2008 3:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 10245    bake... kids that age LOOOOVe to bake and share their creations. paint.... a simple set of primary tempras or water colors is in expensive and easy to clean up with soap and water (take precautions, anyway!). i've never met a kid that didn't love adding something they made to the refrigerator gallery. child friendly web sites with supervision. have mom bring some of her favorite toys with her when she drops her off. read to her and have her read to you. always have crayons, a coloring book or two and some blank paper on hand. (my kids totally rejected coloring books and went straight for the blank paper.) build forts in the living room out of blankets and couch cushions (you might not even have to see her again until mom comes to pick her up!) and don't forget the valium.... with a side of xanax ;o)
