I Complain About My Jobs A Lot lol......... ~Rika~

So, I work for a restaurant called Bonefish Grill. They are very selective in their hiring process [3 standardized tests, 3 interviews, 4 written tests, and a week of intensive training landed me my job as a hostess] and pretty much everything has to be done PERFECTLY.. the "Bonefish Way"..

Even though it's an extremely, extremely busy restaurant [we're talking 3 hour waits] and very stressful, I have fun at my job. I love my co-workers.. we've all gotten together for parties and we've become kind of like a family.

Here's my problem. Now, I understand that I am representing a blossoming company that is trying to get its name associated with excellent, professional service and great food. We've no doubt done our job with that.. we opened on the 28th of January and have already been featured in my county's fine dining magazine as well as the newspaper twice.

I have three facial piercings which I have absolutely NO problem taking out for work.. I fully agree that facial piercings are not the highest level of professionalism. Heck, I don't even mind covering the tattoo on my wrist with a bandaid.

What does bother me.. I have wanted a certain hair style for a long time now. I've had black hair for years and I want to put some light brown/dark blonde in with the black.. so pretty much it'd be brown/blonde on top and black under. I've been growing my roots out in preparation for this for about 4 months. I was told when I was hired that as long as your hair color is natural [no green, blue, pink obviously] that there wouldn't be a problem. But I kind of mentioned it in passing and my manager said it probably wouldn't be appropriate because that's "not how natural hair grows".. they even had a problem with a Puerto Rican guy who died his hair blonde because that's not "natural enough."

Now.. I don't know about you, but dark blonde and black doesn't seem too horrible of a stretch to me As long as it's not some outrageous color and as long as it's tasteful, I don't see the problem. Honestly, who is going to come to a restaurant and never come back again because a hostess had blonde AND black hair rather than one uniform color?

I understand the piercings and those are easy to take out.. it doesn't affect my life at all. I understand covering the tattoo.. doesn't affect me, I can just take the bandaid off. I understand wearing a button-down shirt and shiny shoes to promote a professional appearance. I understand not permitting funky hair colors. But I honest to god just don't get what was wrong with my idea.

I'm going to do it anyway and if they have a problem with it, I'm going to have to find another job. I'm 21 and I'm not getting younger anytime soon.. why not have fun with my appearance while I can?

This was more of a rant than anything, but would you be irritated at least?

Date: 3/13/2008 3:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 64566    Rika , I'm proud of you the way you explained and wrote your story. You seem like a very understanding and reasonable person. I would suggest you ask the manager to ask the person above or even get the company's employees manual and read what it says. There are a couple of things to look into. If you have a chance of bettering yourself as becoming manager some day that would be a great benefit for you. You seem to enjoy all of your co-workers and party with them so I would think about it. I also have to agree with you that you should have some fun when you want too. ..............Clifford

Date: 3/13/2008 4:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 63040    do it blonde is natural, it most likely will be tastefully done so they may not even have a problem with it GL.

Date: 3/13/2008 6:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 62849    Do it anyway, and go in to see your manager early before your first shift after your hair is colored- show him/her, so whoever is in charge can see that you have tasteful hair color, even if that is "not the way natural hair grows." If they see it before you go barging into work one day, they'll see it as less of a rebellious act and more of a "I wanted to do this so I did- here is the result before I make an appearance in front of customers."
Date: 3/13/2008 6:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 56359    Actually, seeing that would make me want to come back… even if you had your facial piercings in. I mean, I don’t have any piercings or plan on getting any, but that’s for me. I love seeing people express themselves and be as unique as they can be. I express myself in other ways. I think that it’s good that you’re going to do it anyway. If you present yourself in the same manner as your write (respectfully, polity, and really well) I’m certain you’ll keep your job. And... off of this subject, you should write another fiction story really soon. I loved your last one
Date: 3/13/2008 8:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 62383    haha, youll get fired im sure.. or asked to change it back. I ussually never worked jobs like that for that reason.
Date: 3/13/2008 8:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 62100    I would be thoroughly irritated and I agree with you 200% Rika...
Date: 3/13/2008 9:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 40979    I would be irritated. Like you said, I would understand them getting upset if you walked in with pink hair but lowlights? As long as your hair looks clean and well groomed, it should not be a problem. What are they going to complain about next? Gray hair? Geez.
Date: 3/13/2008 9:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 63194    Personally, I find people who do what they want in pursuit of being themselves to be the most attractive. I'd come back.
Date: 3/13/2008 11:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 50434    I would do it, as long as I realized it might cost me my job, but thats a decision your going to have to make. If your okay with it then do it. Take care!
Date: 3/13/2008 7:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 21764    I would def be irritated..
Date: 3/13/2008 11:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 58611    If you were making 50,000 a year I would understand thier concern for image, I would do what you want with your hair. You could always wear it up or pulled back. Rage against the machine while you still can!
Date: 3/14/2008 8:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 12709    Yes, Arika. But you're forgetting... I have to wear SHOULDER PADS at work! =P
